I got to run 3 laps in a Balboni Edition Gallardo this morning. It was amazing. I don't know if anything is going to top it in the near future.

Power-wise the 12.5 comes from being practically ideal rather than chemically ideal. Having excess fuel so given imperfect mixing ALL the oxygen will still get used.

So I would guess that maybe the higher rpm allows better mixing. Also if they have injection outboard the throttle bodies that can help atomization/mixing .

Last, if they're maybe playing with adding toluene to their fuel as an anti detonant it's heavier but the ECU and wideband don't know that.

Best I can do with my limited knowledge .
Injection strategy is port injection, rpm cutoff is 12k (they didn't change the cams or anything to adapt to the restrictor), 14:1 compression ratio, 100 octane race gas (standard for FSAE, no additives allowed ). My guess is the 14:1 compression ratio has something to do with why they run so "lean".

What motor? CBR 600?

Look into bike forums and see if they follow the 12.5:1 AFR trend.

The fact that he says it's for cooling rather than power makes me think he may be thinking too far on the theoretical side.

Edit: also, I think I used bar's 14.7 rather than stoich's 14.3 in my lambda to AFR conversion .

GSXR600

Might be an older one, since they mentioned being able to pick up blocks for 400 bucks. Not sure though.

I specifically asked, "I thought usually max power is at 0.9 or so?" The guy told me "well, depends on your setup". Yea not sure what's going on. Apparently a few years ago there was a guy on the team who was an expert at tuning, and the fuel maps he left behind were aiming for about 0.94.

Okay checked gixxer.com, they seem to agree on 13.2:1. Except pump gas is probably a little different from race gas... I think the pump gas stoichiometric ratio (with oxygenates) is like 14.1-14.3? In that case, 13.2 is about 0.93 lambda. Going by the usual 14.7, 13.2 is 0.90. Higher compression may work better on a leaner mix.

Fuck, I can't keep my numbers straight. Where did 14.3 come from ?

Stoich is 14.8 according to my bike engine book (2008). They hold to the 12 to 13 is optimal for Power on a typical performance bike of the era, but while race tuning it can adjusted leaner for better mixing/charge motion/combustion chamber shape. It's pretty involved, gets into fuel volatility curves and stuff. (Stuff I gloss over. ..)

Also is the fuel a spec fuel, or just can't exceed 100 octane?

14.1 is what I found for 10% ethanol fuel. 10% ethanol fuel should be a couple percent less dense (equivalence speaking), but I haven't really checked.

Yes the 100 octane is a spec fuel. Otherwise you'd be able to grab some low octane gasoline, dump as much methanol as possible into it before the octane rating goes over 100, and have a pretty imba fuel right?

Toluene. Weapon of choice during the retarded psi turbo F1 days. 1000 hp/L in qualifying trim...
