I agree that it looks great.

But a lot of performance models have verts with compromised performance. The Corvette is a great example. Some people simply like rag tops, and I think this is a great move for Scion. Some people will want a 4-seat Miata. Time to return serve, Mazda.

Yep, and modern vette coupes (aside from Z06 and ZR1) are targas. Not difficult at all.

*caveat - removing a black or glass targa top from a vette on a really sunny day and burning the living soul out of your hands.

by PITB, i meant having to get in and out of the car to do/undo the top. most people don't want that hassle and that's why sunroofs and convertible tops have survived and t-tops haven't.

Lotus, Porsche, and Chevy still make targa tops, but that is indeed very limited. A lot of soft top vert owners I know get hard tops to preserve their soft tops through winter.

But sure, the most prevalent verts are the convenience options, easy manual soft top, automated soft top, or automated hard top.

Anything automatic will add weight to the vehicle.

the lotus elise/exige is the poster-child of impractical cars and so i'm sure owners are not that put off with the inconvenience of that top. besides, the purpose of that top, imo, is the to aid ingress/egress of the vehicle; without that purpose, i'm sure lotus would had just opted for a fixed top to further aid structural rigidity.

as far as i'm aware, recent models of 911 targas have electrical sliding panels, and not removable ones, and thus are not inconvenient to operate, unlike traditional targas. but such systems require motors and other parts that add weight.

the vette is probably the only car on the market that offers a traditional targa for the sake of a traditional targa.

yes, convertible cars, for the most part, add weight, cost more, and adversely affect structural rigidity and performance, but for someone who genuinely wants a vert, those are all acceptable trade offs.

I think it is nicer then the non-convertible.

Just give me HIDs and push start and a Release Series FR-S and I am good. The convertible is going to weigh too much.

My MR2 targa panels are very easy to remove and put back in. However the seals don't seal so great so that's an issue
