Both in law enforcement? Professional courtesy? That kind of thing...you realize cops don't have to give you a ticket just because they pulled you over, right? Just being pleasant and apologetic for going a bit fast has gotten me out of tickets before. You have a problem with that also?

I dunno about your school, but our FSAE team frightens me a bit. A guy I knew from high school who is now 2nd in command said "see this diff? My GPA went down 0.1-0.2 points just for that". When build season nears an end they spend basically all of their time on the car.

I think I'm going to go this weekend again, it's cool to talk to people who actually know about cars. Gonna talk to the engine building crew this time, as that's my primary interest.

It makes me wonder, because over the interwebz everyone seems to claim 0.85-0.9 is "ideal". Are they just full of shit? Maybe it's that the FSAE car has 14:1 compression pistons so the flame speed is naturally faster.
Is this referencing the output from a narrow band O2 sensor? I ask because those sound like plausible voltage output values and I've often heard the output called lambda, but this would be the first time I've heard of tuning with a narrow band.

I doubt they'd be using a narrowband sensor when they completely replaced injectors, throttle, manifolds, etc. and are using a rather expensive ECU.

Me to, hense the question. I thought a wide band O2s output ranged from 1ish to 3ish volts. Making those numbers, to my understanding, WAY rich.

Definitely not rich, what they said to me was "well ideally you'd want a stoichiometric mixture, but we run a little rich to cool things down". I think that was a newbified explanation obviously since higher fuel concentration changes a few other properties. It definitely was not an O2 sensor voltage reading, because I asked for equivalence ratio/AFR/lambda specifically lol.

Still, does that mean everyone claiming you need to go down to 0.9 to make best power is full of shit?

.94 so ~ 13.7?

Seems lean. What is their injection strategy (single or multiple? Outboard/showerhead or port? ) and rpm range (intake velocity guess?) ? Also if they're using fuel additives?

Power-wise the 12.5 comes from being practically ideal rather than chemically ideal. Having excess fuel so given imperfect mixing ALL the oxygen will still get used.

So I would guess that maybe the higher rpm allows better mixing. Also if they have injection outboard the throttle bodies that can help atomization/mixing .

Last, if they're maybe playing with adding toluene to their fuel as an anti detonant it's heavier but the ECU and wideband don't know that.

Best I can do with my limited knowledge .

Yeah, that's precisely why I don't want to join now... It's so structured and serious. Seems like too much of a commitment to me right now.

Thankfully I'm in the Auto Club, and we build budget AutoX cars and go to car meets and stuff. It's way more laid back than FSAE, but I still get wrenching time in. Plus, I'm on the Exec Board so it's something I can definitely put on the resume...

Reading up on the alumni of UBC's FSAE, one of them (electrical or electronic engineer ?) got a job at Ferrari F1!

That's serious business.
