I am not en expert in anything but it's hard to believe in this day and age that there can be so many parts that have been poorly manufactured or with all the testing this car had that they have an engineering design flaw in the motor.

A software problem involving the ECU though sticks out as the likely culprit particularly if they had been perpetually tweaking it.

That being said I'm going to have a shaman sage my still functioning BRZ this afternoon just to be safe.

Thats what I thought. more than likely a software problem, they are probably just replacing the cam shit cause they are shitting themselves

Like some others said, they're probably taking these various parts from the problemed cars and trying to reproduce the problem in a test engine somewhere. I printed some info from our site and the Subaru Technical Update to give them on my lunch break.
