Having a special use is one thing. Making it a habit is another. I can't think of a time when I want to be in 1st at high speed on the street when 2nd wouldn't do...

We're just implying that there is more than one "proper" way to rev match, depending on your situation. I know OP asked for 4th to 3rd, but it really doesn't hurt to know for the other gears for different situations as well, as they are also "proper" in those situations.

Understanding clutchless and doubleshifting also helps you understand rev matching.

*shrug* Every downshift I double-clutch. It's just plain better for the transmission.

I'm actually a horrible rev matcher....if I don't double clutch. But for some reason, double clutching makes it easier for me. I'm sure its partly because I can get into gear easier, but partly I think its because the mid shift clutch forces my brain into analyzing the shift more, so I pay better attention to everything I do.

My old car had an extremely slow 2nd gear synchro. I double clutch rev matched every 2nd gear downshift.

Oddly I found it worked best when I was driving fast. The timing was easier and it was easier to make everything one seamless combination of movements when it all happened in a split second.
