Yeah, nothing beats working on your own car. Go to Sears, get the tools, get the manual and DO WORK!

The reality of it is shops are going to use impact guns to torque down bolts, especially large ones. I took the suspension on and off my WRX for years using the same bolts and always used an impact gun, you generally get a feel for where the torque needs to be.
If you took your car to a dealer and they had to replace a strut, they are going to impact the bolts. They aren't going to take the time to look at torque specs and bring out a wrench to actually measure the torque. |

I wonder how you all torque down that top mount while the shock shaft spins when your trying to torque it down. Ive never "torque" a top mount, i usually just use the air gun to get it almost all the way down, use the ALLEN key to keep the shaft from spinning and using a wrench to tighten it.

LOL Car damper shafts spin like mad with an impact. I've done it for years and have never had one NOT spin (tightening). KWs do for sure, I've used an impact on them multiple times also.

It's just sloppy work. If a mechanic can't be bothered to take the extra five minutes to do it correctly, then i don't want to know what other corners he's cutting. And if you've followed vivid (and by extension, agency power) you'd know there are a ton of corners being cut. |

I dont mind this as much, it's when they zip on the lugs without hand turning them on first to ensure they won't strip.

Maybe the video didn't show the part where he did the final tightening with a hand ratchet or torque wrench? If you watch the video again, you can see the gun isn't applying much torque on assembly (light movement of the hand).
That's what the mechanic friends I have do: Disassemble with impact, assemble with low impact, tighten by hand. (unless 19mm+, then its full-on impact...) I often don't use an impact, but that's 'cause I have neighbors and work on my cars at night. ![]() -Charlie |
