It's an automatic like in a minivan, or any other car with an automatic transmission that isnt a DSG/SMG/dual clutch system.

It's just set up in a different way than those automatics.
And it all came from the Lexus ISF.

The ISF came out amidst some criticism that it was getting an 8 speed automatic transmission to take on the germans with their dual clutch boxes. And the fear was because its an automatic, its automatically gonna suck when it comes to shifting via paddles or +/- on the shifter (because up until the ISF all paddle shifted automatics have been pretty much garbage in the shifting response/time/feel department)

But Lexus did something clever, it locked up the torque converter in 2nd to 8th gear so that gear changes dont have that delay that all other autos have (or whatever technical mumbo jumbo this involves). this allows the transmission to work very similar to a dual clutch system without being a dual clutch system. i think one drawback to this system is that you still get the typical automatic transmission parasitic drivetrain power loss that is higher than in a clutch based transmission.

they adapted this system into the FRS/BRZ transmission so it functions the same way. Note it is NOT the 8speed lexus transmission with 2 gears lopped off.
