Maybe that is what it is. I can't tell if the fenders are really that wide or just an illusion from the creases/lines used in the design. What you mentioned could fix the problem.

it will be an estimated 2800lbs. Based on these 2 figures, the power-weight ratio is less than the Z.
2 things:

A) 2800 lbs is a worst case scenario in terms of weight (in every term possible). Toyota would've missed the mark by a mile if it weighs that much. 2700lbs tops, at the most, and thats all that should be acceptable for a car this size.
B) I wish people would stop with the comparisons to the Z. This car is not competing with the Z in any shape or form. People who are expecting this car to sell, base, at $25k are also accepting a worse case scenario. A base asking price of $23k would be more believable. The Z -starts- at $31k. Not only that but the cars are in two different leagues. One is a base model, small displacement, starter sports coupe. The other is a middle-upper class 'refined' large displacement sports coupe. Who the hell compares the stats of a 2.0L 4cyl low $20k sports car to a 3.7L V6 low $30k sports car anyways? That's like trying to compare the '93 Celica to the '93 Supra. Would you do that? Are those car's in the same sports category?

Short answer: No, you wouldn't. And if you did you'd be a moron. The FT-86's current, realistic, rivals are the Miata and the Genesis 2.0L Turbo Coupe. One is a 2-seater roadster (already placing it in a different category) and the other is an oversized whale, who's weight is a constant monkey on its back.

The base Mustang you say? If you want raw power and nothing else, then why are you looking at a car that, from start until current, which is almost 2 years, has been ADVERTISED by its creators as a car who's priorities are light weight, balanced, affordable, and is constantly, at every premiere it is taken to, harked as an AE86 successor, which is a car, despite all of its strengths, is the farthest imaginable car to own for a straight-line racer?

You want Toyota to come out with another Z competitor? Well seeing as how the FT-86 has taken the place of the starter sports car (Celica's old podium), I would expect you would have to wait for either another celica to be released (improved to compete in a class above the FT-86, where the 370z currently resides), or Lexus to come out with a 'cheap' (for being a lexus) sports coupe.

Currently, as this car sits, it looks to decimate the 2.0L Gen coupe in every facet. The car, even at a supposed 2800lbs on the FT-86, would still weigh 500lbs more, crank out 11more hp at the, er, well, crank, and basically out torque it. The FT-86 would run circles around this car on a track. Comparable prices too, as I'd hold the R-spec coupe as the closest to the FT-86.

The Miata? It will probably have it beat on the weight side, but the FT-86, if at 200hp, would beat it by 33hp, and have comparable torque (around ~154ft/lbs estimated). The FT-86, however, will probably benefit from a much more stable chassis. As far as other bits go, it will be a 2+2 with much more cargo space and a roomier cabin for drivers, opening up more potential owners (my friend can't even fit in a miata. He's not fat, no where near it, just absurdly tall). I suspect that at grassroot track events, AutoX, etc., the Miata and the FR-S will be fierce competitors in their respective classes. In terms of serious racing, the FR-S will be much more visible with teams.

I think it looks great... Even if it came close to looking like this, I would still be satisfied knowing there will be a RWD car finally! Toyota/Scion already stated that the major & only changes that will take place for the FR-S concept for production will be; Wheels, Brakes & Lighting

Except 1 thing, the car that will compete with the FR-S and Genesis is the Mazda RX-9 which will be release around the same time or months later and it's new all aluminum direct injection 1.6L Rotary that's already being tested will produce at least 235+hp. It also resembles the FR-S in looks.

Ikuda Maeda the designer for the next gen RX platform is waiting for R&D and corporate Mazda to give the go. RX-X concept isn't something we are going to see anytime soon until they can further improve the SKY-R 1.6. Achieving 30-35% efficiency in emissions and oil consumption over the current Renesis. The direct injection only helps marginally to the engine design.

Don't hold your breath for the next gen rotary unless they get a breakthrough. By then a the FR-S will have been on the market for some time.

Looking forward to the "RX-9" To keep yota on their toes with the FT-86. Competition is welcome. An S16 with the 1.6 Turbo from the juke would be cool too. Mitsu how about a starion rethink and rebirth now that you are killing off the eclipse? Honda? hello? anybody home?

You know, had the S15 come to US shores I wouldn't have to dream about a lightweight FR 2+2 coupe. Any reason we got screwed out?

around the time when nissan co almost went down because of bankruptcy, they couldn't bring the S15 states side even if they wanted too. They priced their cars too high for a non-high end or luxury line. $40k for a 300zxTT... $50 for the anniversary edition. And the exchange rates were fluctuation so bad that Nissan USA couldn't keep up. Only reason they stayed afloat in america was SUV sales and cutting down on available platforms worldwide.

I think we are in the FM platform now with nissan...
