Why does everyone think a sub 86/FR-S wouldn't make it to stateside?

Because by in large, tiny 2-seat cars don't sell very well, so justifying the costs to make them legal here vs other countries (lights, emissions, glass) is hard. American's just don't buy very many sub-compact cars.

A sub 86 is the next MR2 (Scion MR-2)...they will build it and it will come to north america.....Not a MR-S but a proper MR-2, in a coupe and a targa model...

$23k and probably a Scion here in North America...

The next Supra (Scion SR-S) will be no more than $40k. The Supra never competed against the GTR, it competed against the Z and the RX7 turbo.

I know a lot of people hate scion, but the FR-S saved scion...

I agree with everything said there except that the supra would go to scion... I dont think toyota would be doing themselves any favors by doing that... everyone knows Supra as toyota the 86 they could do as an fr-s because it was a "new" car and platform. From a marketing stand point they should not put the supra with scion it would be hard to justify a 35k+ scion even with the supra name.

I dont think toyota will label the new supra as a scion, its just out of the range of the intended market. And i fully expect the next supra to be at a minimum 70k and probably a LFA based engine, i can dream cant i? Lol

The engineers already insist that the next "Supra" will be RWD, petrol-powered, and have some form of driver-assist. Considering the context of their conversation, what is the one assist found in sports cars that the FR-S lacks? Possibly some form of dual-clutch automated manual transmission or something similar. Almost all modern serious sports cars (IS-F, LFA, GT-R, Porsches, supercars) have it as the only option.

The engineers also noted the "path" of this future sports car will differ from that of the GT86. The 86's focus is fun-to-drive and a manual transmission brings that out. This upper tier model has to be thrilling to drive with serious performance numbers to "wow" the world. To achieve great numbers, its transmission can't be manual.

Interesting. Any idea where you read that? They could have accomplised the same thing (lowering the limits on the car) with a good all-season tire. I think they needed to hit an MPG goal, thus the craptacular tires.

This isn't the exact interview I remember seeing but this one he goes into more detail why they chose an expensive LRR tire instead of a softer high performance tire.

I wonder how big the uproar is going to be when the "new Supra" comes to the US as a Scion....

Lol I really don't think a "new" Supra would be sold as a Scion. A $50k+ Scion wouldn't make any sense.

A "new" Supra is a nice thought.. but the price tag & insurance costs would kill its sales.. kinda like the last Supra.
