5mph roll up hill or incline, no power?

Question for you guys. I've never noticed this before and I wanted to see if it's normal. I normally don't roll 5mph up a hill, but let's say you're in traffic or someone in front of you decided to slow way down. So I'm rolling at 5mph up an incline or a hill on a manual transmission, and I get on the gas pedal again to speed up. The car bogs and gets no power unless I clutch in and raise the revs first with the gas pedal. This does not happen to level ground, only on inclines or hills. Has anyone have this happen before? Normal?

Edit: Happens on a flat surface too. So I'm rolling at 5mph in 1st, mash the throttle, and the rpms climb slowly to 2000rpm, where it hesitates and bogs. If I stay on the throttle, it usually overcomes it.

If you're in first gear it shouldn't happen. at 5mph, if you're locked out of first, you can double clutch to get back into first to avoid bogging it down.

Most won't agree with the above statement but works for me and I don't have to slip the clutch in second while going up an incline at low speed, putting stress on the transmission.

It's just physics. On an incline, your car is heavier (Sorry, i'm not going to do a free body diagram) therefore needing more torque to pull yourself up. And to get more torque, you need higher revs. If I remember correctly, some of the dyno results show that you probably need to be at least around 3k rpm to get enough torque.

Every time I pull out of my underground parking and go up the rather steep incline to get onto the road It feels as if the car isn't going to make it up. I have to pretty much rev up to 3500 RPM before starting the incline or else the car shakes as if it is about to stall out. If the doorway wasn't such a tight turn I could possibly get some momentum built up and I wouldn't have to peel out just to make it up to the road!

I noticed this also. Almost needs a shorter 1st gear. Anything between 0 and 5mph is hell in traffic. Especially on hills.

The other week I got stuck in a 2 mile up hill stop and go traffic. I felt like I was going to kill the clutch. Never again.

I wouldn't worry about it. I've found this car to be more responsive in that situation than my previous daily driver (Mazda 3). Think about all the manual transmission econo boxes running the same roads as you, but with less HP & torque and more weight to boot.

It's a million times better in these situations than my WRX. Just part of having a 2.0L engine.

It's definitely something I don't normally encounter since I almost never try to hit the throttle so quickly from a slow or low rpm roll, but I did notice it today and I can easily replicate it. I just wanted to see if anyone else has seen the same thing. Thanks for the input.

Yea, I only started noticing it because I was behind someone at the light making the left. I was in first gear and he suddenly slowed down. I just lifted my throttle and the speed dropped to 5 or 6mph. I hit the throttle quickly when he moved out of the way, and I felt the bog. I just need to avoid doing that and continue to clutch in and rev first.

Yeah, if you lifted at 5mph up hill, you were probably 1/2 second away from a stall if you kept it in gear - but I've been there. You lift, your left foot starts going for the clutch, then your path clears so you're back on the gas, but the car ain't happy.

That's why the 5-60mph time for this car is so much slower than 0-60. You lose a few seconds during that bog.
