Probably should avoid the Facebook page, it's basically turned into the kind of page you'd expect from Commodore owners.

What happened to his car was personal, and not at all as a result of any driving. He is a friend of mine.

I no longer have any idea what "hooning" actually means because it's been used by the media as a yardstick purely for idiotic behaviour on the roads. To me, the term "hoon" has always meant someone who is into cars, a legitimate enthusiast and it is the media who have recently stigmatised the term I have used my "hoon" skills, which to me simply means the skills behind the wheel I have developed over many years of track days, skid pan days and more recently, drift days, along with the many defensive and advanced driver skills courses I have done (sought out and paid for by myself) in order to increase my skills and knowledge as a driver - to get me out of situations created by other road users. It's been the fact that I know what my car will do in a given situation that has given me the confidence to avoid or extricate myself from situations brought about by other people not paying attention or behaving downright dangerously! Mate I drive a Q7 as a daily and as a tow car - how much hooning do you think I am going to do in that? I was merely pointing out that in a closed group, surely we don't have to pretend that we are all angels on the road at all times. I'd be amazed if you, or anyone, could stand up and say that you never do anything wrong, that you never speed or you never go through a corner faster than necessary. While I don't drive like an idiot on the road because I have too much respect for other road users to knowingly endanger them, I am not going to be a hypocrite and get on my high horse when people are talking about the way they drive their car on a hills run, when I myself like to go for a spirited drive. These cars were built to go around corners, that's why I bought mine. I will do track time, skid pan time and no doubt I'll do the odd hills run - though I do these on my own, as I like to drive within my limits and not feel rushed or pressured by anyone around me - I'm sorry if you feel that I advocated idiotic behaviour, that wasn't my intent. I simply don't feel that we should all pretend to be angels when the reality is, that none of us are. In all honesty, while excessive speeding isn't bright, I think the guy behind the wheel is generally concentrating at least - the real dangers I see are the people at the speed limit who are on facebook or sending an sms, not watching what's happening around them, blindly thinking because they're doing 5kmh under the limit, they are a safe driver! Cheers Aaron |

And damage control is go!
Edit: Looks like I got kicked out of the group. That'll teach me to advocate safe driving! Last edited by Gir; 08-24-2012 at 06:00 AM. |
