I never noticed the sound until I read this thread. Turned the radio off before getting out of my car yesterday and heard the chirping. Thanks a lot!

My car was looked at ny a SOA field engineer. I've been told theyre aware of the complaints but that its causing no harm (aka "normal operation") and therefore there is not a fix in the works.

Not too thrilled with that news.

^Sad and stupid if true.
A lot of people will end-up with 2-stroke oil in their gas is there's no forthcoming fix, with unknown consequences.

Only stupid people will and Toyota shouldn't be responsible for them.

Mr. Sociable, I'm not addressing you specifically, just quoting your post for the conversation at large.

So our Boxer engines with Direct Injection makes noise, why is anybody surprised by this? I'm surprised people are up in arms. Cars make noise, especially sports cars and as far sports cars go this thing is luxury and quiet, especially for $25k! You don't like noise? Go buy a Nissan LEAF or pony up for a Mercedes E-class.

By the way, for the Ethanol/non-ethanol discussion... It has nothing to do with the evil corn fuel. I also noticed with this car that regardless of E10 or non-eth, I get the same fuel economy and the same crickets.

To me it seems like this "cricket-whining" it's spreading bad mojo, creating a negative stigma about this car and is a little irritating. It makes it seem like it has more flaws then it actually does. Those guys with the CEL's the other thread, they have grounds for complaint.

Hello, if you don't own an 86 and you're thinking about buying one just know the DI system makes noise but there is nothing wrong with it.

Cheers

Thought I would chime in. I'm at ~2300kms and have not had crickets whatsoever yet. There is some noise from DI I'd guess, but not exactly the crickets as was posted in the videos. I don't know what gas dealer filled it at first, but I've been using Shell 91 e-free since and no problems. I did put in 10L of Esso as I was in a pinch, but it was not a completely empty tank of Shell (half of the quarter), so there was no effect. I would not fill up with non-Shell gas to find out / test the crickets, unless I run out of gas and really have to fill up.

I decided to find out exactly where my chirp is coming from in my FR-S... I used a long screw driver to act as a stethoscope and placed it on each injector. On the left side (drivers side) Cylinder closest to the front bumper port injector was the one chirping. It wasn't my DI system at all, although it is very annoying. I really don't think Toyota is going to do something about it, so you can either hold out on it and hope, or look for some new after-market fuel injectors. :P

I'm almost betting that if you put fuel in that has ethanol that you will get the chirping. Keep using ethanol free, if you can!

So you didn't try listening to your HPFP at all? Injectors will always make noise, but it's not that loud.
HPFP is hidden under the shield, but there's a fuel line you can easily listen to.

Oh trust me I will . If I had crickets under the hood, I'd go nuts (based on the videos, its really annoying). Besides there's Shell conveniently located right by my work.

If Toyota and Subaru don't fix this some enterprising aftermarket shop might be able to work up some aftermarket solution. Assuming they fix this at the production line though the market for a product such as this wouldn't be all that big.

Had the chirp after the first hundred miles or so, then it went away literally the moment I changed gas stations (Sunoco to Exxon in this case). Still comes back randomly if I gas up elsewhere, or rarely on hot days with the a/c on full bore.
