Tint Prescription

Who gives these? Eye doctors? Or can any doctor prescribe it?

I wanna tint my BRZ but 50% legal limit here in Minneapolis. Not even worth it for 50%. Was thinking of 35% or 25% with prescription.

Im still covered under my parents health insurance till I hit 25, so I have to find out if their insurance covers eye care. If not, I guess $60 is worth paying just to get a 2 year prescription.

What condition do you have that requires the tint? That would make it easier to answer what kind of doctor you need.

My sister has an eye issue (I forget what its called). She sees an optometrist for it. The state DMV requires A LOT of evidence supporting it, and not many doctors are willing to just write a prescription for it.

She has 5% tint all around and IIRC 35% on the windshield. Its early impossible to drive her car if the sun isnt shining.

LOL yea. I just think the 50% tint is like nothing at all.

I have no problem with it. I think its plenty dark, and if you get good tint it will block UV rays just as well

The back is tinted too? (back windshield)

I think if I'll go 50%, ill go darker on the passenger windows.

Did you have any problem with the windows auto lowering itself when opening the doors?

Or did the tinter deactivated that for you?

No need to deactivate the auto roll down. The tint should be rolled under the weather stripping. I didnt have any issues with it.

The two rear windows and the back glass are 42%, the two door windows are 60%. I've got more pics in my thread (link in sig).

50% is definitely noticeable, especially on a smaller car like the BRZ/FRS that doesn't have huge or a lot of windows like an SUV or wagon. I've done 50% all around on a small sedan in the past, we currently have 50% on the front windows of our Forester XT with 35% on the back and rear sides, and we just got my wife's Fusion done at 35% all the way around. The law here in Ohio is 50% on the front doors, nothing (except a small top band) on the windshield, and unlimited on the rest. I'm taking my chances with 35% all around on the Fusion, but being middle-aged and driving a boring sedan has its advantages. We don't get profiled and pulled over by the cops like I used to when I was in my 20's.

OP- since you're under 25 and still on your parents' insurance, I'll assume you haven't dealt with many people who take their job very seriously. Doctors especially take their job seriously, especially when it means they could lose their licensing for prescribing things that are not needed. Now usually this would be stuff like prescription medicines, or things that could be used for insurance scams (ie claiming a patient has serious I injuries after a car crash when they don't, etc).

That said, unless you know your optometrist well, AND you have a sensitivity to light that sunglasses alone wouldn't help, I think you're SOL asking a doctor to lie and write a medical requirement for window tinting your sports car.

Just spend the $150 to tint it dark, then deal with getting pulled over for it, fix-it ticket, have the tint removed, then afterwards tint it again. (just the front windows would be illegal, so $50 maybe to retint?). I've had dark tint on my car for 10 years, never hassled. My other car has very dark tint all around - makes it tough to see out the side windows at night (like turning at a stop sign). 4 years on that car, no hassles. Just roll the dice if you want dark tint.
