GT86 vs FR-S Fuel recommendations

Did you guys know that in EU/Spain for example, the GT86 recommended fuel is 98Octane, and i read somewhere that they are worried about putting 95Octane in it.

shessh, we suck in america. Growing corn to add ethanol to save the planet so that we can run out of food earlier and fuel .. and our cars run with crappier gas.

Anyone remember 95+ octane in this country -- i barely do. just imagine how much better the FR-S would run with the recommended 98 in other countries.

(eye opener) .. we get lucky i can find 91 somewhere with 9% ethanol.. suks

Hi, I'm spanish, here in the car's manual say that you can use 95 octane but you gonna loose some power, and they recommend to use 98 octane. here in my city, the 98 is at 1.65 euro/litre and 95 is 1.49 euro/litre. I will use 98 for sure.

The octane rating system is different. US 95 = Euro 98

Swiss GT-86 Specs are 95 octane fuel, and we pay about 1.85CHF/Liter (CHF/USD is about 1:1 currently)
98 Octane is aviable on most gas stations, but about 1.98CHF/Liter

My 350z did request 98 minimum, was suprised the GT does only ask for 95.

And in Europe we also have to have some % of ethanol in our fuel aswell, so same shit over here :-)

Yes. There are two ways of rating the octane level of fuel. The Research Octane Number (RON) and Motor Octane Number (MON). One method (RON) will be 8-10 points higher than the other (MON).

Europe uses the RON standard for displaying the octane levels of their gasoline, while in the US we use the Anti Knock Index (AKI). AKI is defined as (RON +MON)/2.

As you see, the AKI is going to be 3-5 points below RON. All in all, there's nothing to complain about.

Also, complaning about poor octane levels and ethanol in the same post is a bit oxymoronic, since ethanol actually raises the octane level of fuel. And it's not like the just added ethanol to gasoline 'just to piss you off'. Before ethanol, there was a chemical called MBTE in gasoline which served as an oxygenate in gasoline. MBTE was deemed hazardous to the environment and a new oxygenate was found (ethanol).

Don't get me wrong - I'm not a fan of the politics that are demanding ethanol-this and ethanol-that, and people trying to push for more ethanol in fuels (because more ethanol starts to degrade fuel lines & such), but that's really another topic.

I think the highest I have around me is 93, last time I checked. Hope that's not a problem >_>

Will you really notice a difference between 91 and 94 octane on this engine?

As said above, our 'super unleaded' is typically 98 RON but may be between 97 and 101 RON, although I think BP no longer market their 'rocket fuel', more's the pity.

That's roughly $8.55 USD per US gallon.

It's not a problem. Like I said- in the US, where we use the AKI system, 91 octane is all that is required. In some places, you can get 93/94 octane, but not 91, so that's what we put in the cars.

From Subaru's web site:

Fuel requirement: Premium unleaded gasoline (91 octane). Recommended: 93 octane.

Not unless your engine has been tuned specifically to take advantage of 94 octane.

But I read Subaru's statement to mean that the BRZ is tuned for 93 AKI. It will run on 91 octane, but since they recommend 93 it may pull timing with 91.
