Your fuel pump and injectors will need to work 30-40% harder and thus you will hit the limitations of the fuel system sooner.

Please correct me if I am wrong.
It's like 29% or something at worst, when unoptimized. With direct injection and the right tune the efficiency of the engine goes up so it's more like a 20% loss in range or less.

Even so E85 will probably cost a little more than gasoline, so it's best to treat it as a very cheap performance fuel that you pay a little premium for.

what are the cons and pros?
I think the entire thread to date touches on most if not all of those questions. TL, DR summary:

1) Yes. Also, 96/100 octane and mixes.

2) So far, so good, with the right tune. Subarus have taken well to E85 in the past. But only time will tell for the BRZ.

3) Pros: Get the Visconti/ECUtek STG 1 package, get the E85 tune, go fast. ~190+WHP as of yesterday and the TQ curve is looking good.

Cons: ???

Count me in on e85. I just checked the website. Then drove out to the actual station to make sure they had the fuel, and they do! Yay. Said 104 octane@ $3.41 per gallon that's .22 less than 87, and .58$ less than 93. All I need to know is what is needed for this fuel if anything.

I already gave my 50$ for the group buy on that ecu flash stg1, ordered a perrin pulley and am currently looking on a full blown exhaust. Living in Florida there are no emissions to worry about. So if cats need to come off no problem. Also debating on the turbo option with e85.
Welcome Z06tofrs! You seem to know plenty already if you've put a deposit down on the Visconti/ecutek package and have ordered a Perrin pulley, both are good choices.

Not all of us are lucky to live in a state so forgiving with emissions. Damn you CARB, damn you!

Staying on topic: switchable fuel maps/map switching is going to be awesome.

Can you give a quick education on this for us?

It is my understanding that e85 is less energy dense than regular fuels... so why is this making more power? is it just the fact that the octane rating is higher than normal fuel, so it can be tuned differently?

In my area, the premium is all 94... is it possible to get a tune optimized for 94? Or will the tune you have for 93 be similar?

You are correct, Ethanol provides less energy per standard volumetric measurement than gasoline and it has a higher standard octane rating.

What you are missing is that when using E85 you must increase the amount of fuel injected to compensate for the ~30% difference in energy. So, if you are at 100% gasoline you would be at around 130% using E85.

Without getting all scientific on you. E85 provides better mixture and burning qualities than gasoline, especially in high compression engines.

E85 with higher octane has a higher auto ignition temp, which means it is less likely to pre-detonate (knock). This means, atleast from a fuel standpoint, you can run higher compression or higher boost (leaner) without knock. As stated, it is a less energy dense fuel, so you have to flow more fuel in order to achieve the same or greater level of power. The more lean you can run an engine the more efficiency you will have in converting the chemical energy into thermal energy and ultimately rotational mechanical energy.

I have to admit when E85 first came out i wasnt a big fan of it, then i eventually found out the tuning capabilities of it and have been hooked on the idea of running E85 since.
