I talked with a tech at the Subaru dealership, he claims that the transmission is only designed to handle a 10% increase in torque. Everything was built with weight in mind and apparently the gearing in the MT is made of lightweight materials. They said they had the same issue with the WRX STI's when people started upgrading them, they were burning through their trannies and differentials..

I did some further snooping around trying to confirm or reject his comments, and it appears that TRD will be releasing a beefier transmission to handle additional torque to go in conjunction with all of the performance upgrades they'll be releasing. I guess time will tell, maybe sooner with that monster turbo.

the STI tranny has ALWAYS been a beast that can take a lot ob abuse.
the one in the WRX is a weak POS though.

Doesn't seem correct.. That's only an increase of 15 lb-ft of torque. The AZ6 the TL70 was based off of held approx 215-220 lb-ft.

Im worried about the transmission in this car as it's rated for low torque.
I found the article that talks all the specifics:

http://kaizenfactor.wordpress.com/20...e-know-so-far/

"For those of you who are looking forward to turbo or supercharge your BRZ / FR-S / GT 86 via the aftermarket, however, we must remind you of a crucial caveat that appears on the second photo of this article: “Medium Torque Capacity RWD 6-Speed Manual transmission (AZ6)”.

"the Aisin AZ6 (or J160 in Toyotaspeak) was deemed to be too weak."

As for the 6MT I believe it should be treated as a new tranny.

Edit: Ne4w transmission (6MT) is NOT the AZ6 but is the all-new TL70...

Guys, whatever they rate the trans for you can double it generally with a sprung clutch and good gear oil and it's fine. I pushed 440wtq from a transmission rated at 180 working torque. Now I'm pushing 385wtq from a 6 speed from a Maxima in my sr20 sentra. The RS6 is rated for 240 working torque. It holds just fine.

So if you can build an automatic solution, I'm up for the kit, depending on price (of course).
