I have an HP Touchpad.. (picked it up when they did the clearance sale last year). I did manage to perform then cyanogen android conversion. (pretty proud of myself for that). It is much improved with android! I also have a HTC EVO 3D cell phone on the Sprint network.

I would love to be able to use it in my car for GPS/NAV and for my kids to watch tv/movies, etc..

It does have a GPS antenna built in, but it doesn't work when it's off the wifi connection at my house. So it's basically worthless in my car.

What could I do to get around this? Do I have to root my phone somehow to make it work as a hub so that I can get the touchpad to use it's data signal?

What's the story with the cache mentioned above? Can you preload all of Google Maps somehow onto the memory of the touchpad and then would it function?

Any help? Thanks in advance!
I can answer this as I am an Android expert who also had an HP Touchpad running Android. GPS does NOT work whatsoever with Android on the Touchpad. That's just right now though. They could eventually fix it, doesn't look like they're focusing on it. There is no backdoor way around it unfortunately. My solution was to sell my Touchpad on eBay for $175 and buy the Nexus 7.

As for the cache thing you mentioned. Google Maps now has Offline Maps which means you can drive around without a data or WiFi connection and you can still see your blue dot of where you are on the map. This also only works with a working GPS system in the device you are using. So the Touchpad can't do it. The Offline Maps is basically just a digital version of a normal map, that just shows your location at all times. It does not have any Google Maps functions such as Navigation or even the ability to search for things or addresses either. It's just a map. You can zoom in on it though to individual streets.

Hopefully they'll offer offline Navigation in the future so you can type in an address and it will navigate you without a data or wifi connection, after downloading a map of the area.

Hope this helps.

Oh well will have to hard-wire the Auxiliary in to the stereo system somehow.

Does anyone know where I can find the plastic dashboard piece around the stereo online? I want one for experimenting with for mounting my Nexus 7. I'd rather not destroy the one I currently have
I have looked on subaruonlinepart.com but didn't see it. But maybe I'm just not looking in the right places..

you don't need to pay for any extra data connection to use this device, right ?

i was thinking of using a GPS receiver with a nexus 7 to have the navigation feature with off-line map usage.

thanks for any help.

I was thinking of doing the same thing; maybe toyota parts outlet? Let me know if you find one, and I'll do the same.

The Nexus 7 is purely a WiFi device. There are no data options.

Really ? Sorry to doubt . . . but are you sure ? That's awesome . ..

What about the GPS receiver ? No data link through anyone either ?

I can buy the receiver and Nexus 7 and not need any paid data connection ?

There is no data option.

It does have a GPS built into the device and it will cache information so that you can use google maps without any type of data or wifi. If you want data, you will need you own hotstop.

WiFi only, it has it's own GPS so I don't know what you mean by buying a GPS receiver. It can pinpoint you very quickly.

If you want internet when you are on the go, you will have to have your own hotspot like Xenith said.

Just happened to see this. Back when Google Maps was crashing a lot for me, I investigated about every other free navigation application. NavFree is one that has full offline maps that you download, with navigation. I remember that there were one or two things that I wasn't in love with, but it was *fast* since all your data was already right on your device.

That's worth trying on the Nexus (or Kindle Fire or whatever wifi-only GPS-equipped tablet you use) if you've looking for in-car navigation.

Google Maps allows you to download maps to the device, FYI.
