you can remove the two black plates/brackets that cover the injection system and reach your hand (or the hand of someone skinny) down there and get to them. The front two I can 100% confirm as I have removed the coil already from cyl number 1. The rear two are a little tighter but I believe it will not be an issue. The rubber on the coil is very flexible (at least at 2k miles) and can bend pretty close to 90 degrees.

Regardless of how the technician actually changes the spark plugs, I am sure that the standard job rate cost will be based on the official recommended engine lift method!

If I don't have an inline swap by 60k, I'm doing it wrong anyways

Did they not use iridum spark plugs? If not, why weren't iridium ones used like every other modern car nowdays and only require replacing every 100k-120k miles?

My STi didn't need to and the manual said it was required as well. Just takes removing the air box and washer tank on that, I'm sure this car should be similar.
Bingo. True for our old Outback XT, will be true for wife's Forester XT as well, and now for my BRZ. Not easily done, but no engine dismount required.

Assuming you're not going to tackle the work yourself...a thought for the FR-S folks:

Subaru has A LOT more experience servicing their boxer engines (even if this one is new), maybe price the 60K service at one of those shops as "BRZ" and see what they say? Maybe they'll be cheaper.

I helped a friend change the plugs on two E-350 vans with the big gas V8 they offered mid 2000s. I did this twice. 32 individual plug changes. Don't remember the engine size but I did most of the work while he assisted. Pretty sure the manual would say the engine has to be pulled.

Those vans saw ridiculous mileage for his business.

I basically had to cram myself into a rather awkward set of positions to get at most of the plugs from the floor of the front of the van. It was tough but as long as one doesn't mind getting dirty it was very doable.

If folks are saying most subie motors can be done without pulling the engine this is what I envision.
