I have not read all 28 pages but I have read a few, and I know the car is still under warranty, but just from a mechanics point of view and my best friend is a master tech at toyota but has not seen a frs come in for work yet, but has anyone tried to Diag themself? By take the belts off and running the engine for a short time to see if it is a internal noise or a belt noise?? I only ask because after all the issues I read about I am hesitant to buy one until issues are sorted out.

Got a call from my dealership today. They replaced the tensioner pulley and are saying that, from what they've seen, this has fixed the chirping noise. Not sure if it's actually true since I pick it up tomorrow, but I guess we'll see. I'll update when I find out more.

I'm skeptical seeing as it went away with ethanol fuel, but who knows...could've been coincidence I guess.

They wont have warmed it up enough to start chirping so they can claim they've fixed it. Try some high grade 2 stroke oil at 1000:1 when you fill up and it will shut up instantly and stay quiet.

Lots of negativity haha.

I stand corrected, tensioner wobble is normal. They replaced my crank pulley saying it was causing the problem. No chirp so far, but I only drove it for ~30min. Will update tonight.

I stand by the fact that we shouldn't have to be adding oil to the gas tp keep it quiet. As such, I refuse to do so. This is on Subaru/Toyota if it is in fact a major issue.

Replacing crank pulley won't do it. Had cricket before and after I replaced mine with the aftermarket one touted about on this forums.

Voted yes, but only after really hard driving. Any other time and it doesn't happen.

Its much quieter than it was originally.

As a log.
Approximately 400 miles - Chirping starts.

Approximately 800 miles - Chirping audibly louder, can hear with music and AC on.

Approximately 1000 miles - Chirping quieter than original. Weather also much cooler, resulting in less AC use. Possible correlation?

1200 miles - First oil change. Chirping stops. With frequent checks just to be sure. No chirping!

2131 miles - This morning. Chirping has appeared to start again =(, but it still quiet. Weather cooler, Much less AC use than before.

Note: My driving has become more and more spirited as time progressed...I dont know if that has anything to do with it.
This is basically what i experienced even the mileage stated was close.

Oh well. New pulley and they'll find out tomorrow that it still chirps.

So wait, is that pulley supposed to be "loose" like lets say you remove the belt and release the tension on the tensioner is the pulley supposed to be loose enough that the grade 8 washer in front of the pulley and pulley can move front to back and wobble about is diameter? I thought this was off when i was swapping the crank pulley so i tightened it down a enough to stop the front to back movement.

Cant we just use the more obvious drivers side and pass. side? Sure this is a little complicated for the RHD cars but lets be honest here, who cares about the people who drive on the wrong side of the road hehe

Good point. You sound like the kind of fellow who enjoys a distilled beverage every now and then. Mostly now, I'm guessing. Let's have a few some time.

Now, back to this horrifying cricket thing. If Toyota issues a TSB, will everybody once again be happy? Or will we all move on to such topics as streaking wiper blades, tires with dirty sidewalls and mean gas station attendants?

Everyone has the tensioner wobble so I assume it's normal.

I totally agree with you but if you want your new car to sound like a new car in the mean time it's a very easy solution. When they have the fix just stop adding it and the noise will return so you can take it in as it was.

Subaru/Scion are definitely aware of the issue. I plan on using ethanol free until we get a TSB for this. Anyone that is having trouble finding good fuel, I would recommend calling around your area for stations that cater to watercraft. I guess a lot of boat engines can't handle the ethanol either, as others have mentioned. I've already found 3 in eastern Washington that use 0% ethanol and sell 92 octane.

Try calling a boat dealership or even places that sell fishing licenses if you can't find a station on pure-gas.org
