I agree! Except non-vintage Chrysler!

I love how he complains the boxer engine makes the car worse, and that he basically implies subaru is not as reliable as toyota when actually toyota is only 'slightly' more reliable. I cant remember where I saw that chart.

to be fair this is 1/3 of this review series (the miata and genesis are still to come)

also jack is well into his forties and has 3 porsches

he doesn't need to be playing with 86s really

for me anyway the MX5 comes dead last but i'd put the genesis above the 86... track prowess is one thing but i'd reckon day to day, the genesis and 86 are easier to live with than the MX5

I'm not sure it's possible for mere mortals to comprehend TTAC, but here is a summary:

- The target market for the FR-S is Gen-Y that lives with their parents, the sort of people that don't know how cool it would be to own a lime green Audi.

- In case you didn't get it the first time, this car is for people that lack ambition. TTAC authors have no such flaw, being imbued with zero self-awareness, so for the usual name drop Jack selects Motor Trend.

- Jack say he like FR-S, but it slow girl car.

- Jack got start driving girl car, so Jack understand girl want cute.

- Jack want reliability, so Mazda and Hyundai is winner!

- Toyota need kick Subaru to curb, make turbo on track, so real driver Jack select slower girl car to say FR-S is Japanese zero!

I'm in the same boat, technically you are Gen Y; but if you can:
-hold a job
-don't live with your parents
-step away from facebook for weeks at a time
-light a fire without accelorant
-hold a face to face conversation with a stranger
-survive a few days without a phone
then you can join me in claiming Gen X.
Hey, I can do these things ;~; all of us gen-y kids arent complete fuck-ups.

The good old "he/she needs to get laid" argument. How do you know he wasn't blown and his salad tossed simultaneously by blond brazilian twins right before he test drove the FRS?

Gen X = Angry, socially, politically and intellectually disenfranchised, lower standard of living than parents (and well lower than promised). Invented punk rock as a music and aesthetic, then wrecked it with new wave, redeemed selves marginally with grunge and garage. Grew up afraid of divorce, nuclear war and politicians (esp. Republicans).

Gen Y = Emotionally detached, disconnected from other humans, prefers social networking, distracted with many electronic toys, unconvinced their standard of living is lower than their parents (in part because they never got the false promise of it, and also due in part to the previously mentioned toys), mashes musical and aesthetic genres together. Grew up afraid of terrorists, AIDS, superbugs, and having one's self esteem threatened.

Both are self centered, moody jerks, and generally a spectacular failure by all reasonable standards.

Both way cooler than boomers (fuckin' hippies).

Such an emotional response to what- if you actually read his comments- are fairly benign criticisms, and not even a damnation (far from it) of the FR-S, just shows an incredible amount of insecurity about the car you chose.

To top it off, and the cherry on top of the butt hurt sundae, people here are claiming Jeremy Clarkson is some sort of epic authority in terms of ANYTHING remotely technical about vehicles.

Here's a clue for those of you apparently clueless: Clarkson is to cars what Jim Cramer is (or was, at one point, when he had more than 17 viewers) to stocks. A clown entertainer. I actually enjoy Clarkson cynicism and entertainment value he brings to the 'telly,' but WTF, you actually think Clarkson is some guru?

And I like the FR-S. A lot. I would strongly consider buying one if it had a useable backseat. I like it more than the Hyundai that was reviewed, and about as much as the Miata.

Cry me a fooking river.
Agreed.

While I was honestly surprised to find Clarkson liked it (tho' will be interesting to see what he actually says on the TV show), by his own admission he knows NOTHING about cars.

And, weirdly, he found it ugly.

Of course, he likes the look of Vauxhalls, and those are typically fabulously horrific looking cars.

But, I gotta say, next gen Miata will probably murder the FR-S...

While I agree that JC doesn't have 7 time F1 WC cred or anything like that, but the man drives cars for a living. Lots, and lots, and lots, and lots of cars. When the group of 7 test drivers that he assembles chooses the GT86 over a slew of other cars that one would think would blow it's doors off, it says something.

I think people are just frustrated at the inconsistencies of this guys review, and the fact that his criticisms also come with personal slights on the owners. My initial though when reading the article was...wow...fuck that guy. My second thought was that he lost a lot of cred (did he have cred? dunno...) by bashing on a car that has gotten almost nothing but hands down praise from almost every well known auto mag/journalist in the world.

Those who, for whatever reason, hate the GT86 are obviously singing praises about how only this guy can see the truth. Pretty much everyone else on the internet is looking at this review like o.O

Whatever powertrain they end up choosing, Mazda is looking at a car that’s not only lighter than the current model, but also one that’s capable of delivering 150 horsepower while also improving its fuel economy by around 10% - and do all that while keeping the car’s price at less than $25,000.

Considering they are practically neck and neck in performance now, yeah, if not "murder" then "hospitalize".

My favorite response to the article in the comments section was by Quentin:

"Sorry guys, this review is so predictable that it is laughable. Between loving the Genesis for being big and fast and loving the Miata for being small and slow (but not liking the FR-S for being in between), we see slams to iPhone, Facebook, student debt, drifting, and McMansions. Does the Miata driver use Google+ on his Android phone while paying for his engineering degree by being a race instructor on weekends? I suppose if you didn’t spend half the “review” digging at what “kids these days” like, it would have been rather short.

Where is the R spec $24,500? Cars.com says it goes for $27,375.

Sorry guys, you’ve jumped the shark. You go too far out of your way to dislike what is popular when being 1.2 seconds behind on a minute and a half track is a massive failure, ridiculously slow, and DFL. When are you going to tell us the Miata’s lap time? Or is it just so fun and light that you don’t care about lap times? If you were buying a car exclusively for the track, why would you spend $27k on a Genesis or $25k on an FR-S when you can have a gently used NC Miata for $12k, anyway?"
