^ Yes, I'd say that my FR-S has a more torquey engine, followed by my previously owned '11 MX-5, and then followed lastly by my high-revving '10 RX-8 R3... Yet the R3 most definitely had advantages which my FR-S will probably never be able to touch.
Will post up a thorough review comparing these three specific sports cars once I get to better understand my FR-S after my first experience with it at a HPDE next month.

Not sure if the specs on paper (159 ft lb torque in the RX-8 vs. 151 ft lb torque in the FR-S / BRZ) would relay the actual feel as clearly.

People generally mean 'low rpm response' when they say torquey. Probably the motor's first torque hump is what he means.

No, I am saying exactly why I didnt like the car. I don't think that mazdas are complete garbage, I just have never thought their quality and reliability to be on the same level as Toyota's.
Just expressing my real opinion. Also, reason 3, is that third door always seemed really strange to me. |

This isn't the thread for it, but I would argue your point about their quality and reliability, IMO they have done better than some other companies. And thank you for fleshing out your reasoning, at least its not just because the car was in a movie. |

I recently looked at used RX-8's on crags-list, about 75 percent of the adds mentioned that the car had a rebuilt motor and none of the cars with rebuilt motors had more than 80,000 miles on the chassis. I think the FR-S is basically a more reliable RX-8

One thing I really do like about the rotary is that I feel confident that I'd be able to perform a simple rebuild on my own, however they definitely aren't cheap for what just seems like a bunch of seals. I do think that if the rotary had been given the same amount or more development as the piston engines then it would be very competitive and not to mention much cheaper if there were more manufacturers doing research on it. |

I wouldn't buy a Mazda product if you paid me to take it! I sold cars for 2 years in the late 80's. It was a tough go, to make it as a 24-25 year old at a few dealerships I worked at, including GM Cadillac and Nissan.
At that time Nissan seemed to hire 10 salespeople/week and fire 11 . Mazda hired 3, kept them on with a company demo as long as they stayed, and no matter what the salespeople did they couldn't piece together anything remotely resembling a living . Generous Motors was generous with reasonable minimum commissions etc but the product just wasn't in high demand. This might have been the times, the particular dealer I worked for, who knows. However as a result this stuck in my head and I wouldn't give Mazda the sweat off my b@lls! Plus, the rotary is a novely piece with no discernable advantage I can see for a daily driver.

I'd buy another Mazda, as the company and car has treated me well for over 94,000 miles of RX-8 ownership now.
My engine was replaced at 84,000 miles, so "reliability" is a complicated question for me. It didn't blow up or anything, it just seemed a little weak on power (I figured I needed new plugs and coils), so they ran a compression test, it failed, and they put a new engine in for free. So from my point of view as an owner, it wasn't a big deal. I just took my car for in for service, and they fixed it ![]() Aside from that, the car has been very solid for 94,000 miles now. No rattles, the interior still looks brand new, etc. The paint has has held up rather well. Very few unexpected non-warranty repairs. I realize experiences vary, but Mazda really stood by me throughout my ownership, with a fun and reliable car and with their service and customer relations, so I'm likely to be buying another Mazda again
