I would guess mechanical scavenge pump. There is a block off plate on the right bank. You pull it and you have access to drive it.

It's as Grady said, WRX scavenge pump! I had been discussing mechanical oil sumps and @KillerBMotorsport suggested that the cam driven pump had way more than enough vacuum to ensure the turbo would not be overrun and that cavitation / oil foaming aren't an issue. I trust them

Edit: It looks like AVO still sells the kit but wow is it $$$$. https://avoturbo.com/brz-frs-86-repl...-oil-pump-kit/

Very cool. I have a buddy that took the WRX route but had to do something special to get it to work.

Are you using socketless hose for your oil line? If so, be aware that it doesn't like both heat and pressure. I've used it for fuel lines before and it was great but I learned a very hard lesson about using it for oil cooler lines (a ton of oil on the garage floor when it popped).

OK, well, I think I need to look into this sooner than later. I'm using the Full Blown Motorsport oil pan and I think I have oil pushing back up the drain into the turbo. I've heard before that it may be a problem since the oil level sits above the drain in the front of the pan.

So, given that I have a buddy that did this, it sounds like adapting the plate to hold the scavenge pump is the hurdle. How did you fit the scavenge pump to the engine?

This was the exact issue I had, except that I just could not clock the turbo perfectly for the drain to be effective under all circumstances (I even hacked up the T3 manifold to be v-band for the clearance, no dice)
Maybe I wasn't fully clear, I went with the AVO bracket but they charge more now for it. I know Solidsnake11 did this but it was rough for him, and someone else had tried but had issues with the pump needing to be recessed a certain amount?
I would just sell 1 stock of NVDA and swallow the AVO cost, it really is incredible and comes with the pump already, [plug and play. I had engineered a small sump tank (even the stock WRX has a little rectangular holding tank the oil goes into first), but we tried it first without and it has been running fine.

On my first turbo setup, I had used a Turbowerx pump. But between that, 10AN lines, fittings, wiring w/ relay, making modifications for it to fit, I would not recommend this route. TurboWerx pump.
While mine worked excellent, it's noisy and I was always worried about it failing during operating while driving and the exhaust kept me unable to hear the pump.

Is there any reason why the vacuum pump for the automatic transmission wouldn't work/couldn't be modified for this purpose? (never mind. That won't work.)

I don't know if it's meant to move liquid, it's just an assist for the brake booster.

Yeah, I did a bit more research and it would be difficult to make that work.

My buddy engineered his own for this. I have the STL files he used for the plate template. The big thing he did was to machine the pump to fit properly since the OEM mounting of the scavenge pump recesses in a way that's difficult to duplicate.

I'm in the process of working through this now.

Badass! There's a huge market hole for something like that, other than AVO's setup... especially if you can get a template for machining the bracket and can supply your own WRX pump.
Hell, you could sell it as just a plate. Not that everything needs to be monetized or shared in general, I'm just blabbing.

I'm not sure either of us is interested in selling anything but I'll ask him if he wants to put this out on Thingiverse to share with others. This is definitely not something for newbies.

I would love to see how AVO adapted the pump to the plate.

I'm going to dig around and see if I happened to take photos. I know I had a couple but I'm not sure they reveal anything. I mostly took them as a comparison to show it really was identical to the fa20 wrx pump

That helps. That plate seems to have some extra holes in it. I've attached the 3d print of the plate my buddy designed.
