Back seat space

I tried to search but came up not getting what I was looking for.

I have a newer Mustang that has a pretty limited back seat area. I am 5'11 and the back of my head hits the rear glass. When I put the front seats where I normally drive they are really close to touching the rear seats so any passenger means that the front seat needs to be slid wayyy up. I have three kids and for the most part I use my Expedition but every once and awhile my 7 year old and 5 year old want to ride in my car. I have also had a few instances where I had to jam an adult back there. They and the front seat passenger were uncomfortable but they survived. This is pretty much all I need from a car. In your opinion does the FR-S/BRZ fit the bill here?

Welcome to our forum Bill.

If you search using keywords (such as your thread title) you should find plenty of threads discussing this.

The short end of it; In a pinch, you could get 4 adults in the car. Not for longer than a few minutes though. With 3 people in the car you just throw someone behind the passenger seat and they wedge their feet under the passenger seat, shouldn't be too bad.

Two 5 and 7 year old kids in the problem should be no problem.

Good question... I went out to my FR-S and specifically sat in the back seat to find out, and by coincidence... I'm almost the same height as you, Bill.

The space for the legs is very tight and limited, of course... But my head doesn't necessarily hit the rear glass if I don't sit all the way upright. If I simply sit like I normally and comfortably do, then the hair on my head barely grazes the rear glass.

Furthermore, I take my two small kids with me almost everywhere in this car... The 1 year old easily makes it with her car seat, but I have to scoot the front seat forward for my 4 year old's legs to fit comfortably... And in that case, the front passenger (my wife) is not the happiest individual afterwards, hehe.

I guess it depends on how you and your kids sit, but I'm only 5'8" and I hit my head when I sit in the back seat. I was thinking 5'7" would sit fine. If I sit in the driver seat in comfortable position, then there hardly is enough room for a rear passenger. So, I never had anyone sit behind me yet. When my 16 month old son in the back seat on a front facing baby seat, my wife and my mother need to sit tight in the front. They're 5'4" and 5'3".

Simply stated! NO! You will not believe how small the FRS / BRZ really is!

There is infact a "backseat."

A search for "backseat" found this one.

I just tell everyone that the back seat was designed for infants and amputees...

My wife was irritated in the beginning that I would want a car without a functional back seat, but once I got her driving around in it, she began to see the attraction.

Of course, when it's down, this car stores mad amounts of STUFF!

I also have a Mustang, and like you said, the front seat isn't too far away from the back seat when it is set for my comfort. In the FR-S, the front seat is touching the rear seat on my side. If the 7yr old rides shotgun, and that seat is pulled ahead, the 5yr old should have plenty of room (at least for the next couple of years). Adults may be another story unless they are both pretty short.

4 circus midgets would probably find all the seats comfortable though the driver might have problems seeing over the dash.

Hi,

Got two kids 9 and 7. In brief, when we go out for a trip or whatever long run... we Take the Rav4. But yes we can fit the two kids in the car and they do have enough space to breath. I have to change a bit my driving position to give some space behind but its working good. Like you said a bit uncomfortable but its tolerable and the car sure worth it! But yeah the FRS is way smaller than the mustang. Try it before but i can tell you that for me it works.

My 8 year old (who is huge for his age - wears a men's size 8 shoe) fits fine in the rear seat. I usually pull the front passenger seat most of the way forward to give him extra legroom, but I could fit a smaller person in the front seat as well if I needed to.

I almost forgot about my Mustang road trip.
I drove my Mustang down to Atlanta for business instead of flying since I was going to be there for a month. As luck would have it I was diverted to SC after a week. I picked up two co workers one at a time. We stayed in Columbia SC for the first day and then we had to make a decision. They said they did not want to rent a car so we all piled into the Mustang and drove down to Hilton Head Island SC which is a three hour trip. We got down with that task early so we drove directly to the next task which was in Spartanburg SC which took over 4 hours. The next morning we drove two hours back down to Commerce GA. My passenger was 5'11 and the back seat passenger was 4'10" . The back seat passenger never complained but the front seat passenger was all sorts of curled up for the duration of the trip. LOL

Here is a pic (it is flipped because it is a front facing camera pic)

Here is all the luggage that fit.

I suppose those days are over if I get an FR-S since that was ridiculous and with only 150 ft lbs the car wouldn't even move. haha

People call my Expedition an SUV but I contend my Mustang is the ultimate Sport utility vehicle because on the way back home from Atlanta I hit up deals gap. (passenger free of course)

that was the last bit of fun I had with my manual Mustang before I had all sorts of clutch issues that ultimately made me trade it for an auto car.

This is where the auto car lives now which is nowhere near as fun.
