This is interesting. I have a couple herniated discs in my lower spine; I hope it won't be an issue. I have a small support pad that came with my Recaro racing bucket; I'll probably just trade the pad between the MR2 and the BRZ when I get it.

No lumbar support

I loved the seats in my FRS until I was on the interstate for more than 45 minutes. My lower back started to hurt and got progressively worse.

There is no lumbar support at all in the seats. I talked to the dealer and they agreed to cancel the transaction after 475 miles. I guess it helps to buy such a desirable car! Regardless, I am a little sad because the car is great, but I didn't want to deal with solving back pain issues. Maybe this will be addressed in future model years and I will be back in the market.

Just be cautious if you need more lumbar support than others.

I'm the OP and my back never got better, infact I threw it out riding a mechanical bull... I bought a lumbar support thingy temporarily until I go to an upholsterer to retrofit my seats... I owned an S2k and never had these problems and the s2k is even lower than this car. The seats just suck there is no excusing it, especially on my alcantara seats.
I'm also doing physical therapy for my back.

I don't know if this helps, but when I buy a new car it always takes me a few weeks for my body/back to get used to the new seat. After some fumbling and getting used to, I find a position that fits usually. There have been times when I just couldn't find a comfortable position and my back would hurt when on the road for any long periods. Hopefully, I won't have this issue with the BRZ. Only time will tell...

Update on my upholstered seats, 2000 miles, one word, awesome. I can take long drives and no back pain at all. I can totally tell the difference when I sit in the passenger seat, which is not modified. I feel sorry for the guy that cancelled his purchase for such a simple fix, he's missing out on a great experience.

In the meantime, prior to my modded seat, I used a roled towel, worked okay, not great.

Yea so I'm about to head on a 1500 mile round trip from NY to TN next Monday night. I'm a bit nervous. Might pick up one of those small lumbar pads just in case. Wish me luck!

I'm in the LA area and was wondering if you or anyone else could recommend a good upholsterer? I have no real back pain, but the bolsters make the seat space too narrow for my upper back. I find that I end up pulling my shoulders back throughout the day when I'm not in the car to put myself back in alignment. The seats are the only thing I need to change about this awesome car.

Think I'll just buy some Recaros or something... I'll miss my Recaros from the EVO.

if you haven't provided feedback to SOA yet, please do so! (Thank the post and hopefully they incorporate it into the next tweak). Yeah I know it won't fix our immediate issue, but hopefully others dont need to go thru our pains as well.

Sometimes lumbar issues can be more of a height-of-the-butt problem relative to the shape of the seat back. You might try sitting on something to raise yourself up, or slide down a bit if you're tall like me (6'4"). The latter is what I have to do to get lined up properly. My issue with the seats is the hardness of the them and how it causes sciatic issues in my left leg on longer drives, but then getting old isn't for wimps.

Seats are brutal on my back and legs during long drives.
The clutch always seems to be a challenge to release smoothly - too much tension at its apex...?
Also, I guess I'm just getting old.

I wish I could swap the seats, but I'd want something that matches, and I wouldn't be interested in some ridiculous racing seats with 6" bolsters that I'd have to limbo over to get into the car, and that cost $1-2K each.

I'm considering coming up with my own, unique, though also a universal, solution.

What I do is to take the seat out of the vehicle, fold the seat forwards and undo the binding on the bottom of the upper portion of the seat cover (not all the way). Now go to a fabric store and get a piece of 1/4 (quarter) inch foam - you don't need much thickness. Cut out a little bit and stuff it into the lower potion of the seat. It must lay flat and not have folds and it must be even on both sides. Now put the seat covering back together. At first you will feel a little uncomfortable, but the new foam will mold to your lower back and make your seat custom fit just for you. I can switch from my 4Runner to my Miata without trouble and can drive both for many hours before I feel uncomfortable. I am looking at a BRZ and I know I will probably have to do this.
