I read thru the entire How To thread:
https://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=103157 Lots of people saying it was an easy mod, so I ordered the GK Tech springs. https://us.gktech.com/products/gt86-...b3bd9a9f&_ss=c Got under there to swap it out and was unable to even remove the eclip. Lots of peoples saying it was sooooo easy on the how to thread, hell one guy even did on his lunch break at work with no tools.... To them I ask, what am I missing? I had my steering wheel off since I was swapping it out and still couldn't situated in a way that offered me access enough to really manipulate anything in there. I'm considering removing the wheel AND the seat next time I try to help me be a little more comfortable while I contemplate my existence. I'm not huge, 6'2'' 220 mostly legs, but damn if I felt like I was all thumbs under there. I know it sounds like it, but I am not a dumbass. I do almost all my own maintenance and mods. Plz tell me your secrets. Is it laying a certain way? going in arms first? Are all of you double jointed? plz help

I would guess your size is working against you. I'm 5'10 and my back is on the SIL when ever I'm doing anything under there. Very cramped. I make old man noises when I need to stand back up again.
If I recall I used pliers to get the clevis pin off, but it's been a solid 7 years since I did that mod. Last edited by RToyo86; 06-06-2025 at 02:27 PM. |

I'm much shorter at 5'6" 170llbs but really had no trouble with this. You can try depressing the pedal a little which should take some tension off and make it easier to pull everything off. If space is the limiting factor then removing the driver seat will certainly give you a lot more room to work with. Just be careful with those stupid pre face lift seat mounting bolts.

Is your car left or right side drive? Mine is right side and getting the spring out was brutal. There is no way I would have attempted to refit it. I waited a while to make sure I liked how it drives without it (which I do) then I threw the spring and other parts away.
There is a video in another thread where the guy removes the whole pedal and does the mod on the bench. This might be easier.

I saw a pic of the RHD pedal assembly and there's no way I would have even attempted that lol I reread the thread and someone mentioned bumping the EClip while in place. Ill try that next time and if that doesn't work I will consider removing the assembly. Thanks to both you for your responses and suggestions!

If you do this mod, take it for a drive with no spring before you fit the GK Tech spring. The spring is totally unnecessary and you may find you're happy without it.

Also if you do this mod, put a towel down all over the carpet and as far back and up as you can. Might even want to order a new $5 pin just in case. Mine went flying when I popped it out, even with a small towel down and got lodged behind the carpet somewhere. Went looking for it to no avail. Put another pin-type thing in there temporarily until the new correct part one came in a few days later.
Personally, I liked the MTEC spring I was installing rather than springless. Mine was also a 2017.
