I carry a s&w .38 because I live in Florida and it's encouraged lol. Small enough to shoot through your pocket if you have to.

Different country, totally different view point. Back in 1978 two of my American cousins and the oldest one’s spouse drove from California across country to Ontario. They took turns riding in the back seat with a loaded rifle across their lap. (I think they hide it under a blanket in the back seat and then one of them sat on it when they crossed into Canada.) My father confiscated the long arm the moment he heard it was in the car.
There was a great special on TV IIRC before the 1988 Calgary Olympics. An American journalist researched and then reported on how our two countries are alike and yet so different. One of the big takeaways for me was that in the US the homesteaders opened up the west. They braved the unknown, and slowly made their way across the territories. They were followed by the merchants who first set up saloons with rooms to rent and places to eat. At the same time the dry goods retailers were busy selling out of the backs of wagons until more building material was available to complete their stores. Only after the some towns were established did the army come into the picture.
In Canada it was the fur traders like the Hudson Bay Company and their voyageurs that broke new ground. The British military went north and west to open the main routes afterward for those who would follow. They brokered treaties with the first nation’s people. (Yes, some were not worth the birch bark they were written on and others were never honored but that’s another story.) They were closely followed by the banks and then the dry goods stores. Spirits were always closely metered out by the authorities of the area which was different from place to place.
That is why in most Canadian towns and cities it was the banks that occupied the main four corners with the other merchants falling in line as they arrived. Also why beer and spirits have always been so tightly controlled. Where as in the US it was the saloons/bars etc. that had those locations and why alcohol has always been in the forefront of the American lifestyle.

Speaking of "open carry", back in the day, back on the farm in Ohio, this was a common sight. Yep, stealing a man's shotgun was right up there with horse stealing - and ya'll know how that could turn out -

I even touched base with coworkers from two jobs ago that I left in Jan 2020 and they said it's chaotic and crappy there too these days. Otherwise I would've tried going back as a referral. It's nuts.

Good luck to you also.

Honestly, the worst. Most of these orgs are really needed, especially for education. I'm still pissed off about the National Weather Service cuts also.

Work has changed, communication is too fast and very transparent.. Everything is measured, don't know who is reading the pie charts/graphs or who has the capacity to read this stuff when looking at multiple projects.. However, the person doing the work becomes a nonentity, a "machine".. oh, the work programmes get shorter, with leaner teams placing further pressure on the worker trying to do a day's work..

They claimed they were scared to travel into unknown states so wanted protection.

Yep, that's the way all hunters had to carry their long guns. That or have a sign letting everyone know what you had in the trunk. But those laws were changed long before I started school.

It was more common in Georgia until they passe the constitutional carry law that no longer requires a permit for concealed weapons. Most folks I know that carry though get the concealed license for reciprocal state coverage.

Yeah, open carry is legal here too. But I question the mentality of someone who wants everyone else to know he has a gun.

Too many untrained civilians think they are Dirty Harry.

We all had those growing up in California. We did a lot of duck hunting. I had one in my Mazda pickup in The '80s.

Exact same here. You don't need a permit to CC. They do have a simple permit you just have to take an on-line class and a background check to get, but to get the reciprocal one you have to take a class at a range where you shoot 200 rounds with an instructor.

I’ve never been a fan of open carry. Even yesterday I had a 3 mile hike into a high mountain lake and both of us were CC. I’d prefer people not know for multiple reasons.

It’s more for the city people uncomfortable with it. I was headed a lot farther around than the casual hikers.
