"A Strange Phrase Keeps Turning Up in Scientific Papers, But Why?
By Aaron J. Snoswell et al., The Conversation

Earlier this year, scientists discovered a peculiar term appearing in published papers: "vegetative electron microscopy".

This phrase, which sounds technical but is actually nonsense, has become a "digital fossil" – an error preserved and reinforced in artificial intelligence (AI) systems that is nearly impossible to remove from our knowledge repositories.

Like biological fossils trapped in rock, these digital artefacts may become permanent fixtures in our information ecosystem.

The case of vegetative electron microscopy offers a troubling glimpse into how AI systems can perpetuate and amplify errors throughout our collective knowledge."

fortunately insurance basically made things right. they paid for the cost of two new oem wheels, tires, lugs, tpms, alignment, and tire mount/balance. they also paid for the bent bracket the thieves likely used to jack the car up.

the thing i ended up not dealing with was the floor above that bent bracket being dented. would’ve been too much work to be worthwhile. plus the body shop would’ve had to ruin and redo a lot of the special GR Motomachi chassis reinforcements and adhesives, which felt more important than a minor floor dent.

the dude listed the two wheels on facebook marketplace like a month later for $300 despite them probably costing $2000 lol.

i was working with the santa clara sheriff dept detective to try and catch the guy. but it took a few weeks for him to get a warrant. sadly he couldn’t even set up a sting because the criminal was very careful about even allowing messages to set up the sale. and even with the warrant, when the detective contacted FB, FB couldn’t provide an accurate location because the guy had been logging in with a VPN.

meanwhile i think the same guy stole the whole set of wheels off another brand new corolla at my complex about 2 months later. at least likely the same guy or criminal ring.

nah but i do have lock nuts and my wheels are white aftermarket ones. so probably less interesting to steal since they attract more attention. i parked my brz with aftermarket wheels here for 3.5 years and never had issues even without lock nuts.
