A number of years ago we had a Bald Eagle visit us on the shores of the Trent River. She returns a couple of times a year. I never have the camera ready. If I do all I get are blurry, out of focus shots. I tried to capture a pair of juveniles fighting over a fish that mom caught for them. You can see my results.
On Sunday I had to rush back home to grab a camera because I’d spotted an Eagle in a tree just across the river and down a bit. I’ve resized the images because I do not have a web storage sight and this forum has a size limit. |

We saw a couple of bald eagles in Yellowstone, but were unable to capture them on camera with my small old Panasonic compact. Quite the unexpected sight though. |

Monday was eclipse day around here.
Came out clear enough to see the sun flares with some afternoon haze (Used 500mm). So I got approximately 2 minutes to figure out a decent exposure where I did not need any filter to block out the destructive rays of the sun on my camera sensor (& my eyes.) I will have to study the way to properly record the next one that comes my way in July 2093... ![]() I was going to go on a little viewing trip southeast towards the Maine border with friends, but having heard rumours that the traffic would be potentially bad on the return decided to watch it from my back yard, another reason to stay home was that my neighbor and I decided that the way overgrown cedar hedge between us gets cut and I had a lot of broken cedars to cut up on my side including one resting on my garage and house roofs due to our last winter storm late last week that saw much heavy snow snap quite a few of them. |

We also were in the direct path of totality for the eclipse. They had been predicting sunshine with some clouds. Just our luck the day was heavy overcast with very few breaks. I watched several vantage points on the TV while the wife sat in our driveway with camera in hand. I came outside with just minutes to go. The effect was far less dramatic than others I had witnessed. BUT, the wife got a couple of really neat shots through the clouds. Cannon 6D 380mm (100 to 400 zoom)

Probably next to the table out of frame since it would be a whole block.

Just a small observation.
I have a new-ish, current gen Sony mobile phone. The camera app is quite impressive with its basic camera controls. I've occasionally read phone reviews and their associated camera performance and been impressed with the way articles have describe phone camera capability. When I have a look at a pic taken with the phone and then review it on the phone I think gee, that's impressive but when I review the pic on my pc (27" 2k monitor) it just falls apart. I had thought that phone pics had to a large extent caught up to "proper" cameras but I guess when one is looking at a pic on a 6 inch screen one can get away with a lot. Sony Xperia 5 V.

Some company default cameras are offloading things to cloud and AI processing.
They'll do it unless you tell them not to, til they do it anyway. So progress. Wow. Have a look at Open Camera on F-droid. It doesn't do a whole lot, but it's on device if that makes a difference.

The image quality from a sensor the size of a thumbnail will never be able to match the quality of an image from a much large sensor(10+ times the surface area), given equal technologies..
That being said, the vast majority of people only care about seeing the image on a phone screen, or maybe an iPad, so Phone Camera's are putting real Camera's out to pasture none-the-less.. People's standards are really low in general anymore, and convenience trumps quality and the effort required to learn how to use an actual camera seals their fate..
