I just mention performing it properly because safety is super important. I've seen people self-tech "inspect" their unsafe cars and then lose body and suspension parts going down the track and nearly bin it turn 1 lap 1 of session 1. |

So wanted to update this thread with how things went down last weekend. First of all, what a surreal experience being on such a historic circuit with so many great people (suncoast pca) around supporting each other. Apparently, i ran a 2:41, which i still have a hard time believing but my instructor was timing my laps with an app.
Car ran beautifully with the fortune auto 500 coilovers, ps4s in stock tire size (5mm front and 20mm rear spacers w/ PP wheels), r1 concepts track pads/rotors with motul 600 fluid, e85 on a OFT tune, cnt racing headers and 75w90 motul 300 in both tranny and diff. I got black flagged end of day two for "an oil smell". I cooked my diff oil, and it smelled so bad the corner workers could smell it. To put this in perspective it wasn't even leaking I believe it was just the Breather valve that opened up and let the stank out. After flushing that in the garage you could smell it in my house even with all the doors closed. FWIW my '17 PP indicated oil temp always went up to just over 270F at the track and then held, even with 95F ambient temps. Not a problem... |

Exactly the same experience here with temperatures, and I ran a 30 weight I mistyped it in my initial post.

Also might make sense to only run a few laps at that high temp vs the entire 20 min session. "Ideal Engine Oil Temp In short: 212-230°F with high-quality oil is what we feel comfortable with for regular street use. Up to 260 is acceptable for track use but is reaching the higher end of the temp scale by that point. Why 212°F? Because that is the temp for water to boil and vaporize. It's critical for a properly functioning PCV/oil vent system to remove water from the oil. If water remains it can freeze and turn the oil into a sludge. Water also reduces oil performance and can interfere with its function. We're comfortable running higher than 212 to keep moisture away but also to thin the oil to a point where it flows properly and does not cause drag. BMW engines work better in a hotter temp zone than if it was too cool. For track use: first, you must have the best oil if you expect the best performance. Second, higher oil temps are nothing to be afraid of (see previous point) and there is no need to run extra-large oil coolers. In our pro race cars we clean all of the radiators and coolers after every session. Higher temp = higher friction and wear so obviously be aware of how long you're running at these temps. Higher temp also equals oil damage, regardless of how premium the oil is. Everything burns at some point and higher temps will damage the oil. If oil reaches sustained temps of 260 we plan to change the oil immediately after the event. We generally set warnings in our AiM dash for 260-270 and would consider ending a session if it was over 270. But also keep in mind that sensors are subject to heat soak and/or residual heat from other components that could artificially raise the sensor temp higher than the actual oil temp. All of the above recommendations are based on using Red Line or another ultra-premium oil that can work in higher temps. FWIW the 0w20 Subaru oil that was in my car for 6 track days (40-60 minutes track time per day, oil at ~275F indicated for probably ~30 minutes per track day) and 4400 street miles tested fine, showed "TBN is plenty strong at 5.1" indicating plenty of life left in the oil.

I can't comment on TBN as I didn't get that test done lol. But if the lab says its still good then I am sure its fine. Always good to have the data for piece of mind.

Oil analysis results from Blackstone with comments. Subaru 0w20 oil in car from 2800 to 7200 on odometer with 6 track days seeing 275F indicated temps:

Thanks for sharing. Iron is 11 and copper 3 for my oil but hard to say if is all related to oil temps
