thanks for your hard work, doesn't matter if you are giving this away or selling it, this is paving the way for tuning this beautiful machine.
Yeah I figured that out a few years ago but not before i went thru more than 5 cables

Tuning your self? This was talked about before - Right now, No.

At some point, yes.

Seems like a lot of people want this....

What would that be worth?

$350 Cable
$250 License
Software Free? or would you be willing to buy a personal copy for yourself?

As for the license, does that belong to the customer after purchase? Say if I get your Stage 1 package through you, but later want to go a little crazy with custom ITBs, headers, cams, etc... and want it dyno tuned locally by an Ecutek dealer (Rocket Rally in this case) will I just have to cover the tuning time through their shop or because they are another dealer would I need a second license?
oh now your thinking - yeah pretty sure just a free flash update

No you dont need a second license if you have another EcuTek tuner tune your car- this is not like HP Tuners.

would the software not come with the $900 18hp tune? how are you supposed to log? I am used to turbo'd cars and would not trust a tune that i can not log and check myself (take it, it is a little different on NA?). I am not trying to flame or start a war, just curious cause if i pay $900 i would want the capabilities to tune myself and reflash without having to wait for someone to reply to my emails and such know what i mean?

The $950 package includes my tune and a way to datalog.

Does not offer you the ability to look or edit my map.

cool when it comes with an unlocked map or when the software to selftune is available i am 100% in even if it is 950$

i can tune the hell outta some engines, but have no know how on how to crack them open and set up all the formulas and all that (which is why i don't mind paying, i know it takes hard work and know how), and would love to be able to get in and really see what this car's ecu is capable of. till then i guess i will just have to play around with the evo x tune cause hopefully it cools down soon!

Everyone that gets a tune is really going to want a cable - Only EcuTek cables work with EcuTek software. Tactrix , vagcom or anything else will not work.

The cable will be used for data logging, flashing updates and going back to stock.

The cable can work on more than one car - cable supports, All 04STi+ 06WRX+, EVOX, Mazda MX-5, Mazda Speed 3/6s, Nissan Juke, Nissan GTR, Subaru Diesel, and by the end of the summer Nissan 350/370Z

-John
I know that the Tactrix and VAGCOM don't work on this platform, I was just using them as examples of hardware that you can borrow from a friend.

I also don't own any of those other cars, so I'm not sure why the broad application list would be relevant except for resale value of the cable. In fact, it kind of makes the idea of sharing a cable between people even more logical...

I think data logging, flashing updates, and returning to stock are excellent features. I just don't see why I would need to own my own, personal cable in order to access these features. I would rather split the cost between a few friends (who possibly own one of the vehicles from the broad list of applications). I don't plan on data logging, reflashing, and returning to stock tune often enough that I would need to have my own cable as opposed to a shared one.

So, is it possible to purchase the tune and license without the cable?

Wow, this has gone back and forth a lot.

John, will you re-tune via email if/when I add more parts? How much is shipping to B4E3L4, Canada? How would you prefer payment? When should I send money?

Hell I would be willing to pay for shipping to ship the cable back if you just want to charge a refundable deposit. For $300 I could flash my car 15 times, assuming a round trip shipping charge of $20 each time. In reality I would only use it once, maybe twice.

Let's compare it to a tactrix cable.

Tactrix-
Does not offer data log support ( must use other software)
Only Supports Subaru, and EVO
Has a mini USB connection thats easy to break <- I've gone thru like 5
Has micro card support for datalogging w/o computer

EcuTek Cable-
Comes with non-java based datalogger that graphs
Supports - Nissan, Mazda, Subaru, Subaru Diesel, EVOX, FRS/BRZ
Solid cable that will not break if you bash your leg into it or rip the USB cord from it.

I think it's worth every penny.

John
you can compare it to things all you want...a USB security key is $5 - $10. There is no way that cable costs more than $50 to make...even that sounds high.

So they sell their $60 cable for $350. That's crazy. It would be fine if it included the license to use their software...or if the license to use their software included their cable.

Anyway, I'll stop bitching now. I'm stoked people are tuning this thing....I just don't like seeing companies blatantly overcharge for stuff.

Why the heck is there so much bitching going on?? No one is forcing anyone at gunpoint to get this prodcut!! Put your mouth in your money, don't like it don't buy it. Soon other options will come out. Get a cheaper one. There is no point in bitching here. Ecutek will charge whatever they want and adjust according to the market. @Visconti, keep us updated.

Oh and before I get flamed, I don't plan to get this tune option. I plan to ewait for more options to come on and THEN decide. No use in bitching and polluting the thread.

Honestly, they can charge whatever they like. No one is forcing you (or anyone else) to buy it. John has spent months of labor developing this, and (like any other company) deserves to recoup his up-front losses. This is the same with Don over at AP and the amount of time and money he put into his turbo development.

The first people to develop for a new platform have no other products or experience on the platform to go off of, so in essence they're shooting in the dark. Drug companies do something similar with the billions they spend on R&D; the FDA gives them an exclusive license for a set period of time to attempt to recoup their losses. After the product is able to be licensed and copied, everyone's prices drop.

To be quite blunt, you accusing him (and ECUtek) of price gouging makes you look worse than them, considering.

The purpose of front loading the cost is to encourage people to continue coming back, now and in the future, for their tuning needs. (well...I've already invested $600...) It's basically the Apple business model. People can either go with it or not.

We are not begrudging either ecutek or visconti their profits for the work they have put in as the first to market, however we do question that does a $60 cable need to be sold for $300 to every end user.

Lets be honest, if the license was 400, the cable was 100, and the flash was 350 we would all buy the cable. But the cable is overpriced to make ecutek more profit on a proprietary item.

I'm guessing that yes, we don't all need cables individually, but we all will need licenses and flashes (I bet none of visconti's test subjects own a cable) despite visconti stepping around our direct question earlier, but, if he or ecutek wil sell it that way remains a mystery.

as i have said in this thread and pm's to him, i completely understand having to charge what they are charging, it takes sleepless nights upon endless days to get into an ecu and decode all the crap that will allow you to "unlock" and actually get visual tables out of it, BUT for 950 bucks i better get the software to tweak my own tune down the road..
