if anything, ford has already positioned themselves towards this route with the f150 ev being based on the same chassis as the gas-f150. so they've got a little more practical knowledge than others to doing it.

Let's see if ford gets attacked by the green shills the way toyota did after they wavered

i think the difference is that toyota didn't 'show their math'. i think that behind the scenes, toyota did all the math, and saw where to go. but they only announced what they were doing.

ford followed the sentiment of the shills, and made the vehicles available. now they're posting hard numbers supporting the sentiment that toyota followed.

so ford is going to end up getting the credit for the 'market shift', while toyota foresaw it, planned for it, and moved towards it, but was shunned because of it.

Toyota is also the whipping boy of the EV world because they didnt pivot to EV's when EV's became "that trendy thing everyone needed to jump on or they will fold!" among other reasons.

clearly the pivot and rampup to EV went much faster than Toyota anticipated, yet it isnt ramping up as fast as the green shills unrealistically believe they will. I think toyota's strategy was provide something from everything so that they can just pivot to the "winning"/dominating tech when the time comes.

Toyota calculated that hybrids were just as green as EVs, and they believed most markets would need hybrids for a long time before being able to move entirely to EVs. End-of-life carbon emission studies all conclude that EVs are significantly better than hybrids now and even much more so when energy comes from renewables.

The adoption rate of EVs seems good, but less than what other countries have done, and it is less than some may have expected, given the government subsidies, yet the S-curve of adoption typically has a long trail of slow adoption until 10-20% of the market is saturated. Once it gets there, usually prices drop and the market matures to support mass adoption. Right now, only 6% of new car sales are EVs, and only 1% of cars on the road are electric, so we are far away from seeing a consumer driven leap in demand/sales, IMO.

No, not really surprised. With the Equinox EV on the road map and now a refreshed version of the Bolt announced last week, it's no real surprise, and really sort of expected.

The low-end Silverado EV WT has also been scrapped so there is that. I'll be cancelling my Silverado reservation because of it.

New Helix Electric Motor For Upcoming Hypercar Has 872 HP And Weighs Just 62 lbs

https://www.carscoops.com/2023/07/he...st-62-lbs/amp/

Quote:
Helix was initially contacted by the unnamed hypercar builder with a peak power figure in mind and demanded a very high steady-state output. To meet the company’s requests, Helix needed to design an architecture that minimizes losses and heat. Testing of the motor has already shown that it can produce over 700 kW (939 hp) of peak power and it hasn’t yet been pushed to its limits, meaning it could pack an even stronger punch.

The British firm notes that compared to the powertrain of the McLaren Artura, its electric motor weighs less than 1/7th of its combustion motor while producing more power. Admittedly, the battery pack of the hypercar it will power is set to weigh much more than the Artura’s fuel tank but it remains very impressive how much power can be extracted from a small and light electric motor like this one.

How long until these come to fruition? Theres been constant breakthroughs but nothing has ever come of these. If its anything like the Solid State battery situation, then we're looking at least 10years out before they actually become usable.

They are past development and have been independently verified. The headlines are headlines; I just copy and pasted them. The details in the articles suggest the batteries have an anode capacity of 10x graphite, so the anode is no longer the lowest denominator determining the specific capacity of the battery. In practice, the batteries would likely have something like double the range or twice the energy density and much faster recharging times (see the chart for comparisons).

https://insideevs.com/news/659256/ve...-battery-cell/

It looks like Amprius are shooting for 2025 to have their factory in Colorado up and running.

https://www.cbsnews.com/colorado/new...bors-petition/

To ballpark some figures to make a general comparison:

Quote:
The 350-volt (nominal, 400v max) Model 3 battery packs are made of four longitudinal modules each containing the groups (bricks). The Long Range [75kW 310miles at 3,800lbs in 2017] version carries 4,416 cells arranged in 96 groups of 46, and weighs 1,060 pounds (480 kg) in a 0.40 m³ volume; a density of 150 Wh/kg (540 kJ/kg).
Battery chemistry differs across Tesla's different models and in different markets, and of course, it has changed over time; the 4680 cells were actually less dense, but much cheaper to produce. I think at best, the power density has been as high as 275 Wh/kg in like the Model S, but if the Model 3 had a 450 Wh/kg Amprius battery, the battery could weigh a third as much, and there would be a boost in range from carrying 707 less pounds, weighing only 3100lbs instead of 3800lbs. Or, there would be much more range like 930 miles of range.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tesla_...(540%20kJ%2Fkg).

I posted this before, but there are solid state batteries in the works.

Quote:
“With further development, we expect our new design for the lithium-air battery to also reach a record energy density of 1200 watt-hours per kilogram,” said Curtiss. “That is nearly four times better than lithium-ion batteries.”
https://www.anl.gov/article/new-desi...the-lithiumion

Just like how we have many different ICEs all trying to make the most power or trying to make a power band specific to the vehicles needs, we will likely see many different battery chemistries and designs. Some of these batteries might be better for performance, some for engagement, some for discharge and recharge speeds, and some for longevity. Maybe they will all coalesce on one perfect design, but I doubt that will be the case. Some of these breakthroughs may not translate to large scale production, or they may not be the cheap enough to mass produce, or they may not be fast enough or reliable enough to mass produce. Everyone wants the perfect solution now, but it will take time to develop and ramp up production. For me, it is just promising to see battery technology continue to advance. It seems clear that there is a lot of potential in the future for better batteries.
