GR86 diver display to 2018 GT86

Hello,

I saw how cool the new display from GR86 looks and I like the precise rpm, oil and coolant temps displayed on the track mode.

I wonder if the new display would fit and work properly on an older GT86? I think that it is basically a computer connected to the sensors, maybe via an OBD cable.

Anyone got an ideea?

Do you code at all?

It's like getting a 5 year old linux MacBook to talk to an Android phone to talk to an Amiga computer, all using unpublished toyota-specific canbus queries.

Hmm.. yes, I do code.

Just like a computer can be connected via ODB to the car, to read all the parameters (rpm, oil pres, oil temp, etc), I imagine the display does the same, or similarly. I am talking about the driver display (speed, gear, temps, etc), not the infomedia one.

You should research the posts on this forum about retrofitting the 2017+ gauge cluster into the 2012-2016 cars.

It's not as easy as you think.

And that's on a somewhat more analog car. The newer ones, as I understand them, have more "technology" and thus are locked down further.

it does, but it's on the canbus network, the OBD output is entirely different and government regulated to output specific functions.

the canbus network is a vehicle-specific network that the oem built from the ground up using proprietary coding that has minimal to zero documentation anywhere, so you need to bit-bang your way through figuring out what does what, and where to put all the calls...

the guy's that have broken the ecu just to tune the motor can take upwards of 1-3 years.

a project of this scope, i would expect a minimum similar timeline to figure out the command structure of the car to the screen. and that's only if you own a 2023 to be able to verify and inject your own code.

I can tell you that the cluster will physically fit (strangely enough), I can also tell you that it won't do anything besides power on if you plug it into the stock harness. The CAN readouts are different between the two generations. You'd need some type of converter box that would take the 2018 input and convert it to 2022+ output to make the cluster function, not to mention making sure the wire harness has the pins in the proper location.
