Random Thoughts - Part III The Search for Spark (No Politics)

My grandmother broke out of the old folks home yesterday. Took about an hour but county sheriff's' found her 3 miles away

Finally met one of my two new company mentors who were paired with me back in April.

Basically my job has a mentorship program and you can apply to be paired either as a mentee or a mentor, and for either leadership or technical (like actual software engineering specific) guidance.

This person is two levels higher than me, basically the second to highest level you can go as a software engineer individual contributor (non management track) and has been in the industry like 20+ years.

Seems like he'll be a helpful mentor! We'll see. My previous jobs haven't had formal mentorship programs but usually I found and made a friend with more experience who I could go to about things outside of my immediate team/org.

I have no idea about what you're talking about - but, it does make me glad that I got out of the corporate workforce before e-mail and cell phones were common place.

On the first floor of my mom's "home" is memory care. Complete lock down.

Glad they found her. We had one in the news recently that didn't turn out so well.

We use slack at work and people constantly do the heart emoji reactions for things.

On my team if someone puts a message that they're not feeling well and will be taking the day or afternoon off to get rest, most of my team puts this "hug-ops" emoji, which is a little heart attached to a parachute.

Like I'm glad we're being supportive of each other and I don't really mind that, but the choice of emoji to use is kinda like... do we really gotta do a hearts and hugs thjng? We're coworkers lol.

Yep. But seriously. Reach beyond just programming. You are a smart kid. I got that from just the few times we were together. Think bigger.

i dunno, the ceo's job is just about perfect all the time...


the worst part of any job is the inter-office politics. just gotta figure out a way to be on the positive side while taking the negative side of it in stride, and things tend to go smoother.

I practically live on Teams at work supporting, consulting with hundreds of engineers and designers globally. It's a wonderfully diverse group. I see and use the heart emoji many times daily. I love how freely it is sprinkled into our conversations.


Don't get me wrong. Teams still sucks.
