Broke down and ordered a 5800x3d. I'm sure it'll be cheaper tomorrow now but it was an acceptable price, and I'll have plenty of time to appreciate it.
May have a 5600x FS soon.

OH NOOOoooooo... Just got the notice that as of Dec. 31, 2023 STEAM will cease supporting WIN7. That's the newest operating system I (or the wife) have on any of our computers. My last big build was back in 2015. Looks like I'll be building a new gaming rig come the fall.
This is my present gaming rig.

seems like the main problem is one specific intel chipset type that's used literally in everything

You haven't heard about the amd 7800x3d fiasco on Asus boards, or their revisionist history and voiding of warranties or their inability to read a voltmeter?

nope. generally stick to intel/nvidia processing, also don't bother keeping up with the jones'. or asus in this case.

i tend to deep dive into subjects as needed.

for instance, just spent the last hour about 10 pages into google searches looking at different wire loom wire insertion tools. found a barely-even-web-visible company in new jersey that makes exactly what i was thinking of 3d printing/designing, except their design is properly form-molded, so it doesn't have the layer lines to deal with that any 3d print would have.

last time i dove into pc issues was about 6 months ago when i wanted an AIO pc/NUC for the tv. i quickly learned of the 2.5gb intel I225-v chipset lan dropout issues and how there's no current or anticipated fix, despite being present in a large quantity of motherboards.

Ok, I finished the game.
I'm not sure about the speech at the finish.

I was surprised by the speech and liked it.
Always nice to hear someone tie problem solving into a life lesson most of us older people probably already know.

Well... my cat killed either my monitor or my GPU. She jumped onto the desk and her static discharge shut my monitor off. It refused to post after I turned it off and on. Turned the computer off and on and got nothing. Monitor still "turns on" but it doesn't post. Same with the rest of the computer. GPU still turns on, too. So yeah... guess I'm SOL if my GPU died.

Will do. Also, after unplugging the monitor for a hot min and coming back, it did post, but everything was bear bones. Refresh rate was at the minimum and I could not change any settings. Also audio drive wasn't showing up. Restarting the computer just led me back to being without post.

I assume your computer is plugged into a properly grounded outlet? That should have taken the shock... Though electricity is always more aggressive than we like to imagine...

You could try Linux, especially if all your games are on steam. Proton works really well since the steam deck launched.

Switched my desktop to Kubuntu Linux 2 months ago, no regrets so far.
