The suspensions aren't that different and with how many owners end up going with aftermarket setups......

I had my suspension here for a few months before my BRZ was even delivered last September.

I just got my order in for a BRZ they say will be delivered in May, which is perfect timing for me (May '22 would have been even better), so I had to cancel my GR86 request. Now I have to find a Toyota owner who wants the alloy knuckles I bought and wants to sell me their suspension and swaybars. I haven't yet looked into changing the bumper. I'd love to, but I rarely part with money over aesthetic changes

Does anyone know of a dealer within 100 mies of Hartford, CT that has a new GR86/BRZ in stock that is not changing ADM? Not too fussy on the specs; just no black or red.

Thanks.

Just keep checking autotrader, cars.com, searching around. I passed up 2 in stock premium manuals at MSRP.

Hope that works out for you man. When I ordered my 86 (March 2022) the dealer informed me it would arrive in 6-12 weeks, or give or take by May or June.

I'm still waiting.

That was my problem with Toyota. It's not really an "order" and they don't know for sure if/when you'll get it until the dealership gets their allotment each month. I was the #2 person to put in a "request" at Denver's largest Toyota dealer as soon as pricing was announced. 1 1/2 years later they still couldn't tell me exactly when I could get a car. The Subaru dealer couldn't take an order when I first asked in January but as soon as ordering was reopened they called me and we made the deal. It's now a specifc order for a specific car that they're sure will arrive in mid-May. That's how it worked the times I've order a Subaru, Mazda, and Ford in the past and I'm amazed Toyota won't do that. Consumers have spoken that they don't like the traditional car shopping experience of driving around to see what's on dealer lots and being told what the dealers expect to receive soon. They want to go on a website and order their car with a projected delivery date, just like everything else they buy. Toyota needs to get with the program.

You should do the same thing I did. The bumper and suspension swap will cost lesd than $1000. Then you've got an 86 with Subaru badges, best of both worlds.

Direct ordering of vehicles just isn't in the near future, thanks to franchise laws. Even in the cases you mentioned where you got a specific car and a specific date, that was because the dealer had better information about allocations, not because the mothership let you order directly from them.

There are a lot of legal hurdles that have to be overcome before the manufacturers can take your direct order and assign you a slot on the production line.

Subaru allows make-to-order, Toyota does not. They have different processes when it comes to planning. Toyota provides forecasts by region that are fulfilled, and dealers are allocated inventory based on that. Subaru does that too, but also allows for make to order requests.

You are not ordering directly from Subaru, but your dealership is doing that on your behalf essentially.

Exactly, and it's asinine that any car maker wouldn't allow that, especially for their low volume specialty models. I'm thinking Toyota is in the minority here because they're the first manufacturer I've been interested in a car from who didn't have an order system.

Subaru's ordering system is effectively the same as a 'build to order' type thing but really they allow a certain fraction of their planned production to be customer ordered. So any car that gets customer ordered was already in the build plan exactly 'as ordered,' they just allow the possibility for someone to come along and pick it out for themselves.

I'm curious (but not nearly enough to actively search for answers) how this is all managed. Surely dealers have a finite amount of customer orders they can make. Is it per model, or overall? Then how do the orders they put through affect their normal allocations? Those are the reasons I don't think Toyota would ever do it like that. It's more to deal with, dealers would try to game it and would probably piss off a lot of them. It wouldn't necessarily have any effect on the production side of things.

I did it more than 10 years ago when I special ordered my Mustang GT track pack.

I wanted the base trim, in Oxford White, with the track pack. I couldn't find one single track pack car in the country that wasn't higher trim levels with a bunch of extras I didn't want.

Turns out it was still a popular spec with enthusiasts that somehow didn't realize you could special order it that way. I drove the car for 7 months and traded it back in to another dealer for more than I paid for it.

I am curious why franchise laws wouldn't allow this? My '23 BRZ is literally the 4th separate car I've special ordered in the last 12.5 years.

What you did isn't what I'm referring to by direct ordering. You ordered a specific car, sure, many of us have done that, but your order went through a dealership, which likely meant they used an allocated build slot to order the car on your behalf.

I'm referring to building a car on an OEM website, paying for it there, and having it delivered from the factory to your home or a designated delivery facility. You can do this with some manufacturers, but they are not ones with large franchise organizations.

That is also why you can't buy a Tesla or a Polestar (for example) in every state.

Gotcha, I misinterpreted your post.
