lol right.

I read a past story of Canada trying to shoot down a balloon with a pair of F-18's but it didn't work out very well. Dunno if that affected the decision or not.

I can tell you right now they didn't try strafing it horizontally across the top.

Also, parts ordered to try rebuilding my turntable. Belt had disentegrated since I last did anything with it but supposedly it's better than anything I could get below $1k, and this already has an upgraded stylus. $16 in parts so far, let's see if that's all it takes.
it's typically the belt.

i repaired many, many cassette decks pulled out of the garbage with replacement radioshack belts in the 90's. none of them had any other mechanical issues.

keep the technik's stuff alive as long as possible! it's good gear!

If I recall correctly the service ceiling of a F-22 is about at the max altitude these 2 were flying, which was still @10,000 ft below the balloon, hence requiring the use of the missile.

Also replacing the 6 caps. Common for them to cause inconsistent speed. They're 50 years old... Single sided pcb and through hole, should be a lot easier than the smd caps I just replaced on one of my squeezeboxes to fix it's analog output section.

If they used chains they would have lasted longer.

TIL that there is, for those who have it, an HSA and FSA store. Full of items that are approved to be purchased using either account.

At what appears, in many cases, to be at least 3 times the normal retail!

Some are pretty spot on. But nevertheless, it wouldn't truly be a USA website for medical supplies, it if didn't truly reflect the cost of medical care.

TIL (well actually it was on Saturday) that the wife and I are "Old Folks".
Pulled into the gas station to fill up the STi. As I'm reaching down to "pop" the fuel door the wife gets out to go into the store to pay. Before I get the door open I hear her in conversation with some guy:

some guy: Did you buy that new?
the wife : Yes
some guy: Interested in selling it?
the wife : No
some guy: If I give you my number would you call me when you do decide to sell it.
the wife : That might be a long time from now
some guy: I've been told that the best cars to buy are those that have been owned by "Old Folks" from new.
They know the the value of a dollar and take good care of their stuff.

I have had this conversation before. This was probably more true to a generation one or two back from us that lived through the depression and imeadiate post WW2 years. Yes we are "old" by the latest generation standards but we are not THAT old. We grew up in the 60s and 70s which was start of the SPEND SPEND SPEND generations. The odds of finding a car that was beat on by somebody in our age range is just as good as a current 18 year old. Same applies to finding a car that has been meticulously maintained since there are young guys that baby their cars and old guys that still drive the crap outta them.

Typical lazy generalization like saying Asians are good at math.
