Few weeks late, but this little lady turned 1 year old on November 25th.

It's been a steep learning curve training a pup for the first time, but it's totally worth it and she is such a great companion.

This son of a bitch figured out how to break into the bottom drawer of my bathroom where their toothbrushes and toothpaste are. Figured maybe he wanted a bit of a scrubbing. He stole and bit the toothbrush in half so we got little finger brushes. Motherfucker locked on the finger brush with my finger in it. I tried prying open his mouth with my other hand and bit and drew blood. Such a troubled young man.

I know the feeling. Haru really hates when I try to do anything unusual like brush his teeth like that.

Which is funny because he routinely will play bite my finger and nibble on it in his mouth, so like what's so different from me having some toothpaste on it and wiping it on the same teeth

Fortunately not much blood. He doesn't usually clamp his teeth down. He basically puts my hand or finger teeth to teeth and then pulls a bit, so it ends up being more of a bunch of scratches than anything. Still, can be painful and it definitely makes things like teeth cleaning and nail trimming nearly impossible no matter how much I work on it with him.

One thing we have always done with dogs from puppy day home #1 is get them used to their food being taken from them, being gentle taking food, and then opening their mouths when I grab their jaw s and say "open". I can take a bone they are eating, or their food bowl away with no issue. Reason is, I want my dogs to behave if I don't see a small child try to take something from them, or feed them. All it takes is a child to even think they were bit by your dog and your dog is put down, and your being sued.

Yeah I did pretty much all these things. I'm able to take away marrow bones or other treats he's working on. Hand fed him the first few months almost every meal, etc.

I raised my girl from a pup but he’s a couple years through different owners, shelters and a rescue to me. She obeys and I can tell her to drop something. I do absolutely worry about children. If a child is near him with food, I’m removing him.

Highly recommend getting a playpen. I have one of those 4x4 ft configurable ones. I almost never actually close it these days, Haru uses it as one of his den spaces.

I'd love to toss it because it does take some space, but it is helpful to lock him in if someone from maintenance comes into my unit or something like that.
