Toyota sold 11,996 GR86 in 2022, which Subaru sold 3,345 in the US. 480 (80% of 600) represents about 5% of overall Toyota buyers. I'm thinking Toyota doesn't have much to reconcile, they know their buyers.
That's a fair point, but who out of those 12k people that bought a GR86 were just random people looking for a car? I think far and away enthusiast-minded people were seeking them out. Getting one of these, even an automatic took some real bending over backwards in 2022 (like any car at the time) so you weren't going to have too many random samples of the overall population leaving the dealership with one just because it was there. I feel like those 600 people are pretty representative of who was actually trying to get one in 2022.

Anyhow that site isn't nearly as enthusiast-ish as this one. I think the same survey on this site would have been like 95% manual hah

This was my first attempt at buying a Toyota and will certainly be my last. This company doesn't take orders and even their largest dealer in the largest city for 1000mi has no idea if or when they will get a second 86 (I was second on their wait list). I can only assume this company is set up to sell cars to the dumb masses who stumble onto a dealer lot and buy what's there. I've bought new vehicles from Subaru, Mazda, and Ford (all ordered). The experience was similar in all those instances but this process has been absurd. What a disappointment that a company making such a great car is so bad at selling them.

Yeah this is very frustrating that the largest car company in the world cannot allow customers to spec out their preference in car. It's like they decide in advance what they think the public will buy. Such a stupid marketing decision! They should allow a build-to-order option! And put controls in place that doesn't allow individual "stealerships" to upcharge what they feel is the current market value for these cars!

I guess today is, "Let's repeat things that other's have been saying for more than a year day."

"More than a year"? No one had received a car a year ago and it was barely over a year ago that the first of us put in our "orders" or "requests for allocation" or whatever this company calls it. You're way off kid.

Can you not see the irony in what you wrote?

Maybe you should take over Toyota and we can watch it plummet.

People had cars in 2021. Has been two years since requests could be made. They have sold over 13,000 of them so far.
YOU have no clue what you are talking about.

Ok, question. If Toyota implemented an ordering system like Subaru's, how would that have any negative impact on their bottom line? How would that result in them making/selling fewer cars?

I came to this forum trying to figure out how to get one of these things. I figured there must be something I was missing, surely Toyota isn't this broken. What's the trick? There is none, it's just bad. Toyota's way of doling out cars only serves customers looking for high volume models. Just because it works for their bottom line doesn't mean it isn't creating awful customer experiences. I can't tell you how many times I've heard "I wanted a GR86 but gave up, went and ordered a BRZ." Which is an odd thing, considering there are 4 GR86 for every BRZ.

Also, I will save tcoat from having to reply:

They are! People are waiting two years for appliance vehicles.
Over 13,000 people managed to get one. Because a handful of individuals have not yet does not mean the system is broken.

The long wait is finally over. I ”ordered” a gr86 last year (1/9/22) and six months with no updates, placed an order with Subaru back on 7/21/22. Yesterday, I finally received my BRZ vin and should expect delivery by the end of the month. I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. I’ve seen multiple deliveries of my preferred spec gr86 throughout this wait (Trueno blue, 6spd, premium), but dealers are marking them to be anywhere from $40-$43,000 otd all said and done. I know it’s not hq’s fault for what private dealers do, but it was such a turn off talking to these sales people and listening to their reasons to mark these cars up out of their competing class.

Toyota pricing wasn't announced until Nov '21 and dealers wouldn't take anything until then. Where do you get the idea that someone got a car in '21? It was very late Winter or even Spring '22 before anyone received a GR86.

They're big because they sell a lot of Tacomas and Rav4s to people who stumble onto car lots. They are not very successful at catering to the enthusiast market.
