Have you been in downtown Detroit in the last 10 years or so? It is actually very nice now. For about a 6 block radius that is. Port Huron is a summer resort area so is dead in the winter but hopping in the summer. My wife and I visit both on a fairly regular basis.
Northern Michigan is pretty much the PNW with smaller trees and a big lake instead of an ocean.

I guess that you only appreciate division if it's accompanied by a gigantic waterfall...

Yeah, I didn't think it was bad, I just don't care for big cities. Last time I was there was 19'. though I was mostly up in the NE corner of the metro area. The northern parts really remind me of PNW too.

Downtown Detroit is rapidly approaching Vegas as far as tourism goes. It is a real success story. As long as it doesn't collapse on itself it will slowly spread out and revitalize the whole city.

I go to a hobby shop in Kalamazoo once every couple of years. You do not want to live there no matter how much fun it is to say Kalamazoo.

Hard to believe that Michigan is the only state where that happens. Georgia comes close. The Chattahoochee River divides a good portion of NW Georgia from the rest of the state. There's only a short distance between the headwaters and the NC state line that prevent it from "qualifying".

Personally I always wanted to live in Moon, KY, either there or Big Beaver Lick, KY. Used to drive through both on the way to my Grandparent's farm right outside Versailles, KY. (pronounced "verr-Sails" not like that French place)
