I’ve been running studded nokian hakkapelliitas and had the non studded version before that. Personally unless someone has to regularly go in underground garage where studded tires are forbidden, it’s a no brainer for heavy snow and ice conditions. They are a bit noisier, but the braking, traction and directional control you gain is substantial and well worth it. Initially I was concerned they might be a little slippery in raining conditions on asphalt, but it’s not the case, you can threshold brake them on aspalt as well no problem.

You can threshold any vehicle on any surface with any tires any time.

Personally I’ve been running Redline 0-30 in winter (vice 0-20 due to the turbo), and we had
Two weeks of -30C at the thermometer last winter, and it held up fine. Redline is expensive however so I would not necessarily recommend it for regular stock and daily driving applications. I switched to it when going FI, to maximize longevity of the engine, and use higher grades in summer.

You are absolutely right… I realized the incoherence of the words after I wrote it… what I meant was that I was able to get very good threshold braking distance with them, such that it was not a concern for normal emergency braking situations compared to non studded tires. I actually bedded my ferodo DS2500 winter brake pads with them on, so that was a good test.

Throw a quart of this in your engine, add a pat of butter, and you'll have some smooth sailing.
