Like Yamanouchi from Mazda was talking about options to keep the rotary engine alive. Quoted: A range-extender rotary unit powered by hydrogen. Prototypes using the technology are already in use, where the rotary is used to produce electric power and steam is the only emission. Then he went on to say, "we can't rule out the possibility [of a rotary-powered MX-5]."

Whatever anyway..... JUST BE RWD!!!!!!!!!!!!

IMHO, I think it's a smart move by Honda of Japan not to let this take priority. Honda has a lot more to worry about than producing something to compete with the 86/BRZ. The new Civic is downright horrible. I test drove one before I had my heart set of the FRS and found that the cheap look and feel of the interior mixed with super loud cabin is not what I wanted. Honda also called the concept of the new Accord as "evolutionary" but all I see is the same old accord with lights placed in strange places. Honda has indeed lost its way.

Honda has followed Nissan, Mitsubishi, and Mazda into the toilet in my opinion.

I've not even looked at anything from Honda for awhile now, they don't do anything sporty anymore. Its a shame too, in the 90s they were pretty awesome.

Mazda is trying though, they are finally improving their engines, and they deserve some credit for selling the RX8 for so long and keeping the MX5 alive (despite giving it a total shit drivetrain)

Wait, the CR-Z is heavy? I think the CR-Z is most of the way there, it needs 1000 more revs (probably has the lowest rev limit out of any "sport" car that's not pushrods), possibly a supercharger, and RWD. If they make anything rear wheel drive, and give the engine half a thought, that's something to be grateful for. For the MR-S, Toyota bothered to give the 1ZZ some lightened rods so it revs a teensy bit more. Honda didn't even bother with that, the LEA is weaker than some L15 variants. They deserve some credit for giving it a 6 speed manual transmission though.

If you want a cool honda these days this is what you have to do:

1) find mint NSX then call it a day, or
2) ek hatch, or crx stripped out (everything), + K20
3) ???
4) Profit

That's the problem. Whenever any auto manufacturer abandons their performance product they slip into the downward spiral of mediocrity. It happened to the Big 3 in the mid-to-late 70s and 80s. That's when the Japanese really took over. Now they've fallen into the same rut the Big 3 did, only without the oppressing economic incentives that drove their American counterparts there. That's the worst part. The Japanese are closest to their performance roots in the 90s vs the American performance roots of the 60s and early 70s, and yet it's the Americans who were able to get back into the performance game first.

Problem is the emissions that's what killed the type r. Only Japan got the Fd2. Would rather that than an 86

Well they've already fugged up by saying it's not a priority to begin with. I know the designers from the 80-90's have gone off and retired but that's not to say that Honda could go back to their racing hoots heritage like how Toyota has recently done. Honda needs to bring back some soul and a perfect opportunity would be with a FR-S/BRZ competitor.

I'm calling it now... if Honda was really devoted in making a RWD, 2+2/roadster, 2.0 4cyl, and under 30K that looked good, it would blow the doors off the Scion and Subaru to moon.

Last time Honda Japan listened to Honda North America they ended up with a shitty Civic. Wait until Honda Japan wakes up again.
