today i learned that some towns suck just as much as HOA's.

coworker got a 48h warning ticket for his dad parking a trailer in his driveway...

i'm going to tell him to take the ticket and fight it. it doesn't appear to be an official ordinance, just an 'issue'. there doesn't appear to be any codified law for it...

long and short of it is that the town has a salaried 'code enforcement' person, and now like any government office, it's easier to make a new position than get rid of an existing position...

in going through the town ordinances, i also learned that it's illegal to park any vehicle on any street for more than 72 hours unless one gets a specific permit from the chief of police. who then can issue a permit for only the name, address, make, and model of the vehicle that will be parked at that location longer than 72 hours...

i love this one. if my town did this, i'd be in violation most weeks now with time change, and the fact that i work until after dusk...

gotta love small town **** swinging. how terrible would it be to SEE trash containers!?! home values probably shot up dozens of pennies when they passed this one!

it's at least a good reminder that i should probably read through my town ordinances.

of course, i know my town has one that says trailers must not be visible from the street and be behind a fence. but both neighbors have boats that haven't moved for the past 5 years, so if that's my canary-in-coal-mine, i think i'm pretty safe.

maybe i should report them! will anyone think of the property values?!? my house could be worth a whole $10 more!

lol, just started reading through my towns codes/ordinances. this jumped out at me.

The sad part of such ordinances isn't that they exist but that some dumb shit went down at some point in the past that somebody thought needed being controlled and it was bad enough that they convinced another bunch of people to pass a law.
Dumb laws are the result of dumb people doing dumb shit.

This is a pretty common (and usually unenforced) regulation. I've lived in just about every type of community and they all had a similar ordinance on trash cans.

And it is not an unreasonable one to have on the books for when they do need to enforce it. It isn't the cans themselves that are the issue but where you have cans you often also end up with loose trash. Great for those that actually clean up but not so good for those that just don't care. Unfortunately there are many that just don't care so the laws have to exist.

Same applies for cars/boats/trailers that are not actually in use stored in a driveway. Easy to say "I am going to do something with it some day" but then it sits there for years and years and just wastes away to the point it is indeed an eyesore.

Let me see if I understand this...
You can get fined if your trash cans are not where someone thinks they should be outside of a specific time period. You can get fined if your car/boat/RV is not moved every couple of days. Plus, you can get in deep dodo if you do not pay those fines in a timely manner.
BUT... the homeless can take over a city park and turn it into a dump. All the time thumbing their noses at the authorities knowing a group of lawyers and advocates will defend their rights to do so. We're screwed!

Well, you can't fine someone if they don't have any money...

The fun ordinance in my city prohibits the storage of vehicles/trailers/watercraft/etc on unimproved surfaces in front or rear yard, with unlicensed/inoperable vehicles prohibited from outdoor storage in the front or rear.

However, side yards were not specifically defined until later amendments and were not incorporated into the anti-storage rules. As a result, the space between lot lines and houses is a free-for-all of clutter and dilapidated cars.

I’d much rather people park their shit out of sight behind their house, but there’s no will to change the situation.
