I had never given it much thought till I heard it talked about. Was a no shit moment. Lol yeah I get that a lot. Trying to explain to customers what they are seeing is voltage potential when testing components.

This weekend is the big annual air show here.
So TIL that when two F-15s make low altitude high speed passes over you house every five minutes for over two hours things go from “oh cool an F-15” to “ya we get it the air show is coming now pack it up already” in a hurry.

the local 'boys club' gmc/cadillac dealer in town(all the old men seem to have a long term relationship with a salesman there, they won't even look at me sideways) looks like a ghost town. i was joking about hw they must be etting ready to close up shop and my neighbor was saying that they're one of the only dealers in the area selling at msrp. they're selling so fast, they're selling off of what's coming in on the truck in a few months instead, so the majority of every truck that stops there is pre-sold. that salesman really just needed to say "ADM is because we can, and you can't stop us."

The dealer has the original window sticker on the car from 2020. There is another window sticker on the windshieldwith a different price. There is another price listed on their website, and yet another price on every other national listing. They would not give us a final price on the car. There were two "options" that were on the inventory sheet that were not listed anywhere else. They kept making up numbers as they went along. They gave some bs excuse that they couldn't do a credit inquiry. He offered to do a retail order so we could get financing but in the end they changed their mind and said I had to use their financing at 8.9%. Then they went back and said they would discount the two "options" only if we agreed to the higher purchase price. But they would not tell us which of the four prices this was based upon. The car also needed brakes and that was agreed to but I think he tried to put the retail cost of the brake job in the price of the car... but he wouldn't say it. For cars flying off the lots, trucks, and trailers, this car has been sitting in their inventory for 10+ months. Only one other person expressed interest and we were the only ones allowed to test drive it. Literally everyone in the whole dealership came to see it leave the lot. Driving the 90 minutes home we laughed because the closest we came to a deal was all on their terms at some unknown price. We felt like it was a street corner card game. At one point my wife said "I'm bored and I want to go home". And this car is for her. Dealers should make money. I'm not depriving them that. Why can't they be up front about things? Why do they have to hold you hostage, turn up the heat in the office you are sitting to make you rush through things only to find out something was added and you didn't notice it because you were hungry and dehydrated.

Feb 2020 (yes COVID had just started but still a hard to get vehicle) Me- "hi I would like to get an 86 please" Salesman - OK what are you after. We don't carry them because they are a hassle with tire kickers and test drivers but can order one" Pulls up configurator on computer and the first thing that pops up was the Hakone. Me - "OHHHH can you get me one of those?" Salesman - "I doubt it but let me see. I will get back to you tomorrow" Me - "OK thanks here is my card just give me a call" Total elapsed time 15 minutes. Next day Salesman - "We found one. It is in Calgary so will need to get shipped across the country but it is the very last MT for sale" Me - OK I will be in after work and we will do up the paper work" Salesman - "perfect" After work Me - "So what is the price?" Salesman - " MSRP is $34K so that is the price" Me - "can't you do better? This is the second car I bought here." Salesman - "Not really since we had to trade a car to the other dealer to get it. But we can work on some extras" Me - "that is fine.I do want tint" Salesman - "OK we will throw that in" Me - "How about ceramic coat?" Salesman - "How about 1/2 price?" Me- "OK and extended warranty? I don't trust the history on electronics in these (I lied)." Salesman - "How about $500 that includes your first 6 services (cost of $80 each) for free" Me - "what sort of price will you give me on trade for a 350,000 kilometer FRS?" Salesman - "UMMMMMMM sorry but not much since it will go straight to auction" Me - "Understandable I will sell it privately" Me - "Let's do the paperwork" Total elapsed time 1/2 an hour. February 2022 (parts and new vehicle shortages in full swing. Subaru dealer to get the wife the Ascent Us - "We here that used car values are high and would like to trade the Outback for and Ascent" Salesman - "Oh yes it is a good time but it could take 6 weeks or more to get one" Us - "Well let's see what can be done" Salesman - "OK what trim and colour?" Us - "Blue Onyx Edition" Salesman - "Nice choice. That would be $47,000. (MSRP) I can give you $33,000 for the Outback (was a 2018 we bought in 2019 for $34,000)" Us - "That is fine what can you do on snow tires and tow package?" Salesman - "Half off tires and we can throw in the tow package". Us - "If takes a long time to come what about trade in value on the Outback" Salesman - "Don't go over 10,000 or so kilometers and that value will be firm. We will honour the contract" Us - "Done. Put in the order" Later when talking to the finance/add on manager my wife (that is what she does for a living) and the guy talked in code for a few minutes and we got a free extended warranty by the time they were done. The whole thing took under an hour and most of that time was spent sipping coffee and eating doughnuts. Since it was diner time they even offered up some ham sandwiches. The moral of the story is that not ALL dealers are out to screw people over it just seems that way since those are the stories that get told.

Me: Hmmm, we need a new car (picks up phone) Salesguy: Hello Me: Hey, we need a new car, I'd like a xxxxx at $100 over factory invoice (or 10% under list if it was a used car). Salesguy: Sure, I'll arrange it. Call you back. 5 minutes elapsed, phone rings. Salesguy: Hey, all arranged you can pick up tomorrow. Me: Good deal, we still on for family dinner this Saturday at xxxxxx. Salesguy: Yep, see you then. Sigh, one of the main reasons I miss my Father-In-Law.

These are stories similar to experiences I've had in the past and I tell the story behind my BRZ to anyone who will listen. We have bought our fair share of cars and while some processes were long and drawn out, this was especially painful. We were dead serious about the car and our trade is worth 60% of the asking price. Pulled up in a Lexus... planned to leave in a different Lexus. We were the only customer in the place the entire time and they were acting as though they were doing us a favor. I did my research on the car and went with a handful of questions about the history - which they had every answer. Every answer brought more doubt that the car wasn't beat on half its life and we were still interested. At 3,200 miles the original owner traded it for a Lotus; between 3,200 and 6,500 miles it went through two sets of OEM tires and it needs brakes.
Nothing about it makes any sense. Let's see if they call us towards the end of the month to talk again. If not.... good on them. If they do, we are ready. Quote:

i walked in, they asked if they could help me, i told them i was interested in the blue brz on the lot. first thing the salesman said was "i bet you know more about this car than i do" it was pre-covid, so they went a bit under msrp, but upfront on the best pricing they could offer without the games, took a few minutes to explain the add-ons but never pressured any of them. for a 'walk in', i was in and out, including test drive, in under an hour. i left feeling a little bad for being a little verbally abrupt with them after the last 4 months of putting up with other dealers. 4 months later, i went back, but because they remembered me, it only took about a half hour start to finish... it's still really weird when a dealer treats me like a human being...

Ok, I'll share my purchase experience.
I said to my wife, " hey honey, I want to go check out this car I've heard about, want to go? ", and we were off to the dealer. At the dealer my wife says, "oooo, I like the blue one." Salesman shows up. Salesman - want to drive it? Me - yes On the drive I make the sales guy pucker a bit sliding a little and reving it up a bit. Salesman - Whoa, take it easy. You're not supposed to rev it too much, it's brand new. (I forgot to mention you need to read the salesman lines in an Indian accent) Me - Don't worry, I'm buying it. Back at the dealership... Wife - Well? Me - I want it. Wife - ok. Me - so, what's your best price? Salesman - Scion has a no-haggle policy. I can not go any lower than the price on the sticker in the window. Me - really? I want it for $100 less than the sticker. Salesman - I am sorry sir, I cannot do it. Me - Ok, one dollar less. Salesman - I'm sorry sir, I cannot do it even for one dollar less. It is the rule. Me - well then forget it. Let's go honey. Salesman - but, but sir...this is the rule, it is our of my hands! Me - (chuckling) I'm kidding, I want it. Let's go do the paperwork. Salesman - oh sir, thank you so much. I have not had a sale all week. Did the paperwork in about 30 minutes and drove it home. |

Lol, the salesman that test drove the FRS with me encouraged me to drive it faster.
When I test drove the GR86, the salesman scanned my license, handed me the keys, pointed me to the car, requested that I don't do burnouts or beat on it, and said have fun. Absolutely going back there if I decide to buy a GR86. |

MomHawk and I were big Quantum Leap fans. The new version (which isn't so much a remake but a continuation of the story) sounds promising. It starts some 20 or so years later, with a new team that decides to go find Sam.

Personally, I prefer the Scion model (Saturn used it as well). Not having the aggravation and pricing the cars fairly makes me a customer.
