Literally every body panel is different. This may not come over well in pictures, but in the metal I think the second gen looks more cohesive than the first gen.

The overall shape and size is almost the same. From 100 feet away you could hardly tell the difference.

And like I mentioned, details is what defines a car in most cases. I am still of the opinion that a Gen2 looks nothing like a Gen1. If that was the case, there wouldn't be such a strong preference, in terms of cosmetic, from one gen to another. Again, dated doesn't mean bad. It it the natural evolution of time and car designs. Like dadhawk suggested, let's agree to disagree on this one. But one thing i will give you, i do miss my Gen1 because of RTV!!

Ultimately, that's why I wouldn't buy one, but I'm glad they built it, and I'm glad it has an audience.

Whenever a new version of a car is released, it by default makes the older version look dated. Just the way things work. Doesn’t mean the new version looks better, just that it looks newer (duh).
The biggest thing to me is, if you ever get a chance to see the gen 1 vs gen 2 Twins side by side in person, it’s immediately clear the gen 2 has more modern surfacing. There’s more depth to the design and fewer flat surfaces. Whether that appeals to you or not is subjective but personally it’s grown on me and definitely aged the 1st gen a bit now for me.

I've only seen a couple of Gen 2' driving by but thought they looked good. I don't think they look good enough to "upgrade" though.
I currently have a FR-S that will be a full on track car next spring. Roll bar, race seat and harness. It's difficult for me to compromise between track and street. I'd like to get a 17-20 BRZ and do some OE+ cosmetic mods and SC it. |

I think that is true for the average run of the mill car, you know the ones that get the job done, but in the long term is forgettable. Take a name that has been around for a long time, the Corvette for instance. There are iterations of that car that are very desirable. Then there are some you can't give away. A friend recently picked up a Corvette in a horse trade thinking that he could turn it over for a modest profit. Very low miles and excellent condition, but in the end it was a break even proposition. However, it was part of a multi-vehicle trade and it got the deal done. The point is, if it was a Vette from another time, it would have been a keeper regardless of the style compared to the '23 Vette.

The Corvette line is interesting. I don't think the C7 looks dated even today, but I think that's largely because the C8 is a complete clean-sheet design that's not even a FR layout anymore. If the C8 had instead further evolved the C7 body, I think the C7 would have started to look more dated.

That being said, the only thing out of that list that I was bummed to not have on my '13 were the fog lights. Dual zone climate control in a cabin this small always seemed ridiculous to me, and I'll never really understand the fascination with Alcantra. The other stuff is neat but not worth the extra cost or weight. Maybe it's because I came to the FRS from older, inexpensive cars, but I was (and continue to be) perfectly content with the interior materials. Fit and finish were certainly a bit lacking, but apparently that's normal for Subaru so whatever. Anyway, it's all about that base (model). |
