We supposedly have an "enclave" (sounds ominous) of white squirrels about 1/2 an hour from home. I have been there many, many times and have yet to see a single one.

We've had piebald squirrels where they have patches or complete areas that are pure white. In most of Ontario there are two prominent colours, the grey and the black. But on my road we have blonde squirrels. No idea why but somewhere in the local gene pool there is a recessive that overrides the dominant. This little fellow was a bright gold colour when he was young. His body molted and became this dark version but he kept his bright tail.

That color would act like a beacon to the Falcons, Hawks and Owls around my home I suspect.

Are there any mammals (other than seals) at all that are native to Hawaii?

By that criteria seals aren't native either.
"Along with sealions and walruses, seals belong to a group called pinnipeds, which evolved from land animals. Researchers pinned down concrete evidence of this transition in 2007 with the discovery of Puijila darwini. Alive 20-24 million years ago, this amphibious freshwater carnivore had the muscular legs characteristic of a land creature but the webbed feet, streamlined body and tail of an aquatic animal. The theory goes that P darwini lived in once temperate Arctic lakes and rivers before gradually switching to an ocean lifestyle as these lakes began to freeze over."

Poor wording: the transition didn't happen in 2007.

True

It doesn't help that for most of the geological periods the Hawaiian islands either didn't exist or were sterile lumps of volcanic rock.

DO NOT eat the dead fish you find along river banks during a drought.

I don't care what the natives tell you about shad & roe.

Them ain't roe you see oozing out of it's body! -
