It seem so far almost all the failures are cars built in Nov/Dec of last year.

Justin - 12/21 Verus - 11/21 PhotoMike - 02/22 Having said that, I have read comments with build dates of 04/22 where RTV was found on the dip stick. Not sure if that amounts to anything though.

oil pan baffle plate from Revolution (a JP aftermarket part Brand)
http://revo-tune.jp/catalog/products/detail/447 A owner just drop the pan to clean oil pickup, and realize some rubber valve flaps from oil pan baffle plate (see the pics below) somehow break into pieces, and it stuck in the oil pickup. according to RHDJapan, "This version (Ver.3) provides maximum reduction of oil sloshing up from the oil pan and maximum return with multiple one-way valve flaps.” IDK if this is the product QC problem or if the owner bought counterfeit products, but probably best to stay away from it |

Those flap valves should never be used on a horizontal surface. They sag open, eventually take a set and become non-functional, and can even fail. Especially the cheap ones. Not how BMW (the original design from back in the 90s) intended for them to be used.

But IMO, finding RTV in pick ups is not going to be a small sample size, or "blown out of proportions". Or the problem might exist only in engines from a certain date range if this was caught. Yes, internet always magnifies a problem (if there is even one to begin with) but in this case, I think there is only a small subset of owners that is even aware of this and even a smaller subset of these aware owners are dropping their pans to verify. Most are not doing it for the fear of losing their warranty. From this very small group that have dropped their pans, you are already seeing people posting that they found RTV in their pick up. Keep in mind we are not talking about spun bearings/toast engines, we are just talking about finding RTV inside the pick up. Is this a problem? No one knows. But it does make you think if all these FA24s are on borrowed time. For my own benefits, I would be very happy to be told that i am wrong about this. I would love to see more reports of owners who dropped their pans to check and found no RTV in the pick up. But thus far, for those that checked, it does seems the hit rate is decently high.

So, if you drop the pan, and do this work yourself, aren't you pretty much guaranteeing you won't get an engine repair under warranty should there be an issue later?

Very very grey area IMO. I am going to email Subaru Canada with that exact question and see what they say. I am perfectly capable of performing the work myself but will not do so IF i am chancing my warranty.

"This warranty is only applicable if the car was originally delivered by an authorized Canadian Subaru Dealer." "DAMAGE OR CORROSION DUE TO ACCIDENTS, MISUSE OR ALTERATION Repairs required as a result of misuse, e.g. racing, rally or a competitive event; neglect; alteration; improper adjustment or repairs; " Not grey at all in my mind. If you remove and reseal the pan and something happens you have altered the factory parts (sealant) and they could use that as an excuse. Doesn't matter if you, I or anybody else on a forum thinks that it is OK to do it gives them an out if they decide they want to play hardball. I would not even trust if a dealer said "sure"! It sucks but they have a very good legal team that worded the warranty and they know what they can make stick if they want to. OH and LOL apparently the whole promoting a sports car on a race track then not covering it is not different than promoting the SUVs for off road! SPECIAL PROVISION FOR ALL-WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLES This warranty applies only to on-road use of the SUBARU All-Wheel Drive Vehicle. Any failure or defect resulting from off-road use of the All-Wheel Drive vehicle will not be covered by this warranty. On-road use means use on established roadways either paved, gravel, mud, sand, ice or snow.
