I have a group of friends, who used to happen to be coworkers, that were like that.

There were 5 of us, and part of our job was to go into a company site, access their IT infrastructure and make recommendations to bring them to corporate standards.

We all had strong opinions and would often argue about the right solution. More than once, people in the meetings that didn't know us said "You guys really don't like each other do you?". Our answer was "Oh no, that's just the way we work. After hours, we're great friends, our families know each other, and we often gather as a group".

No one really believed us though!

Banter is always optional, especially in the workplace. Respect comes first. I'm always happy when someone isn't afraid to hit me with both barrels. People are intimidated with my size.

There was so much bickering while ordering food at a Jack In The Box drive through in Portland that Ultra and I were pretty sure the girl thought we we a cute gay couple!

It's okay if that is not their thing, as long as they don't try to dish out what they can't handle. If they don't handle it well, they get left alone. The banter among our long time employees is pretty constant though they tend to not harass temps or new employees till they have been there a few months. I just find with the large amount of temps we have gone through this year, upwards of 20 as opposed to a normal of 3, it seems almost universal among that age group. I do think it is more to do with them not knowing where the boundaries are as you mentioned in your own experience.

I typically find a lot more camaraderie among people when we can poke fun at each other. It is what I am used to, and been used to my entire life.

everyone's different. but it's definitely an age thing.

he's passed away since, cancer got him the second go-round after remission, but used to work for a pool contractor that was one of the most extreme examples. first generation italian guy, with a mouth to match. first couple jobs, we didn't get along the greatest with him throwing constant insults all the time to us new people. finally had enough of it, and let him have it. after i started dishing it back to him, his entire mood shifted on the job and he was suddenly my best buddy. finally figured out if i didn't really lay into him right off the bat when getting to the job, he would get really serious and make life miserable for everyone. but shoot the shit and harass him for 20 minutes, and he'd get giddy like a schoolgirl and leave everyone alone.
