The FD2 Civic Type-R is a seriously focused track machine. Look at the fastest lap times at Tsukuba during that Best Motoring shootout. Only 3 tenths slower than the NSX, about a tenth faster than a 350Z and nearly a whole second faster than an S2000. The FD2 is the superior performance car out of the box when compared to the 86/BRZ.

In terms of the Civic Type R vs the 86 TRD. Here is a Honda fanboy defending his rice:

It still is FWD vs RWD no matter how you look at it. But those of you who don't think driving a FWD is any fun, need to drive a Civic Type R. That thing has a pretty damn rigid chassis, it actually oversteers into corners when late braking. The rear comes right around. I think the CTR does 0-60 in just under 6 seconds? not bad for a 200hp FWD. How much did the stock 86 get around Tsukuba? Around 1:10? I think that's what the videos told us. According to fastlaps.com the CTR does it in 1:07.49. Pretty damn fast for a FWD .

220hp 160lbs of tq, 2800lbs, LSD, 5.1 final drive, vtec @ 5800rpm
That's alot of fun for a little honda civic.


Here is a little bit for the guys who have no idea what the Civic Type R is (as it isn't sold in America)


Suzuka Lap Time was 2"35"20

Tried to look for a Toyota 86 one. Only found a BRZ one.. Not sure if it's the same full lap but this video gave us 2'42"139


That is some epic 7 second difference. To make it worse the BRZ had Advan AD08s, Light weight rims, and Endless Brakes. Of course the driver made the difference too, As Tsuchiya was driving the FD2. No clue who was driving the BRZ.

BTW the Canadian CSX-S is a actually a nifty car if you plan to do a FD2 conversion. It's much easier to convert a CSX to a FD2 than a FA5 to a FD2. If you are into that whole JDM conversion thing.



This is still my favorite Civic of all time
since it got a turbo. just go look at laptimes. i hate to use the nurburg numbers but look at all the cars it murders. probably more accurately though would be the car and driver lightning laps. see how it beats things like the isf, sti, evo elise sc and the s2000 cr.

Yup the Cobalt SS turbo is no joke. Add on the factory-supported upgrades and it only gets better. The OEM Stage 1 power kit brings it up to 280 hp / 320 tq.



If you were to get the sedan with the subtle spoiler, you would be a very rude awakening to an unsuspecting STi and Evo driver. GTI guys get especially pissed at these cars it seems.

Its hard to compare both cars. They are too different.

I for one sold my Civic FD2R and swapped to the BRZ. Where I come from it costs nearly twice the money to go from an FD2R to a BRZ/86. That aside, there is no price for a proper 2 dr sports car with a low CG and light weight package.

The FD2R just drives very differently to the BRZ. Its definitely no slouch but its just different in terms of power delivery, traction and cornering sensation.

If anything, the build quality from Honda seems to be better but its slight. I just completed the recommended 1500km run-in period and am increasing the revs. My personal opinion is 200hp is decent enough. At least on RON 98 petrol it is. You definitely feel the surge after clearing 3-4k rpm torque dip. I would think with an aftermarket IHE setup, the car would be a blast.

I am looking forward to tracking with the BRZ and am certain it would be a much different experience.

drove my friend's (slightly modded) FD2R for a 800km trip for him and it's just awesome. the R feels hardcore and 86 is definitely softer in comparision. surprisingly the FD is good for the long trip even when the suspension is very hard. the seat and driving position are excellent and i feel better after the drive in the R than a Golf GTI (very weird). it would be great to have both R and 86/BRZ in my garage lol

at the moment my 86 makes me frustrated. with the lowish mileage (700km) the gearbox is still very tight and i can't rev it pass 4000rpm often. i just can't wait for it to loosen up and i can explore the higher rev range more often. however there is definitley potential and i just need to ride it out.
