Drove the 997 C2S today. I see that as something I'd rather grow old with than the GR86. Similar size and you still feel everything but it isn't harsh and still really exhilarating putting into a corner. With the GR86 everything is sharper edged, partially owing to it being 200-250 lbs lighter. Really aggressive steering ratio, touchy throttle. Kind of understeery actually until it snap oversteers. Maybe it's the PS4 (non-S) tires and tire width.

Oh other major impression is that the GR86 doesn't really throttle steer much for me. The 4 cylinder or maybe the way the electronic throttle is tuned on lift, it has so little engine braking and I don't get much weight transfer from lifting.

Neighbor talked to me about the 86. He said he looked it up seeing it in my driveway and was surprised how affordable it was. He thought just looking at the car that it would be a 40-50k car. For under 30k this car is incredible for what it offers. It's stunning enough that my neighbor would look it up. It even looks 20k more than it costs.

I strongly disagree. It definitely has more engine braking than a gen1 car. There's a downhill section of 680 N near San Ramon (I think) where in the 2017 1st gen car I had to downshift to 5th to prevent the car from picking up speed, whereas my gen2 slows down even in 6th when off throttle — despite having a ~5% taller final drive.

Furthermore, I have enough engine braking to provoke oversteer at corner entry into T4 at Thunderhill East, which is a ~60 mph kink on street tires. As long as you have enough front camber the amount of engine braking should be more than enough.

Agreed on the engine braking. If i'm stuck in traffic and take my foot completely off the throttle at low speed it almost jerks the car with the loss of engine power. Hill driving is similar, car still wants the barest touch of gas even on steep grades in 6th or else it'll slow down.

That's just bad throttle tuning. Some manual cars do that in 1st gear.

I spent a fair amount of time fine-tuning the tip-in and drive-by-wire table of my gen1 BRZ to smooth that out, along with jerks when I touch the throttle pedal at the apex in a corner on track.

Have you tried BRZ? It's supposed to be softer than GR86.
