Well said. I have been crying for 6 years during my daily commutes because my 16 BRZ AT is 0.8 sec slower than the MT to 60.

Reading this gave me a conniption so I went and tested this out yesterday on the highway after the engine was fully warmed up to make sure I wasn't out of my mind. Redlined to 2nd gear on the on ramp. Shifted to third. Pushed it to 6K RPM in third and let it stay as high as possible off throttle until I could downshift. 2nd gear tops out at 61-63MPH. Third gear let me downshift at 60MPH which put me at around 7000 RPM+. Did it again on an empty (safe) stretch of straight highway, this time in 4rth gear and inching up to 5000 RPM (~90MPH) and I could still downshift to third, which tops out at 91-93MPH. Edit: this is on a post-refresh first gen 86. I imagine 2nd gen would be identical, except the speeds would be slightly different due to the 3.9 FD. Last edited by OwlDance; 06-08-2022 at 03:18 PM. |

This is sad.
The 86 is an experience car. Next thing I'll hear is that the CVT WRX is good and it doesn't ruin any chance of it being a drivers car. Autos are faster in most cars due to gearing, thankfully this car is setup properly and its not the case.

The MT is for the experience and engagement. Nothing to do with speed. Doubt anyone could feel the difference. And who are you racing on your DD or weekend mountain run. Both MT and AT are slow anyway, they shine in the turns not the straights.

When near every high performance racing series uses dual clutch/"auto" setups and CVTs and torque converters can also lock and hold gears with similarly end user operated mechanisms, yes, it doesn't ruin any chance of these vehicles being a driver's car. |

Lol no. Autos are faster on track because they can shift quicker then a person can as well as allowing you to keep both hands on the wheel.
